The Atlantic staff writer Mark Leibovich, during Sunday's episode of MSNBC's Inside with Jen Psaki, further explained his point in a January 11 op-ed he wrote titled, "What Is Nikki Haley Even Talking About?"

Pointing to his op-ed, Psaki emphasized, "This struck me, because the truth is, when you're on the rise as a candidate, it's much easier place to be than when you're in the spotlight. And then people like you and others start paying attention to, what exactly they're talking about. So tell us a little bit more about that piece."

Leibovich replied, "I would say that Nikki Haley — I will give her the credit. She's an extremely gifted political athlete. She rose above the rest of a pretty motley field in the debates. I think we all saw that. I think that's why a lot of people gave her a pretty close look. That's also evident in the room she goes to. She's very good at events, she probably the best retail politician in the field right now. And again, [Florida Governor] Ron DeSantis isn't exactly the greatest competition here."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

The Atlantic writer continued, "But I wanted to go out and sort of watch her up close and get a sense of really where she was going with all of this. And I do think that in one sense you get from watching her more than once, is once you scratch the surface, it's really quite unclear not only what her message is, but why she's even doing this. I think until the last few days, it seemed very, very terrified really of laying any kind of glove on Donald Trump. I think in the last few days, maybe she's found her voice a little bit around the Trump-Biden alternative message. I think Trump's given her a lot of material. But again, there's the sense that she never really gave a sense of why she was in this to begin with, and whether she really wanted to win or whether she was playing for second, which sounds like Trump sort of foreclosed on a couple days ago, and she did too, and maybe that signals maybe a pivot in the last few days but it won't really do anything."
