The data of millions of Americans is at risk after a global cyberattack hit the United States earlier this week, CNN reports.

On Thursday, CNN exclusively reported the cyberattack hit "federal agencies, state governments, private corporations, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions in the" U.S.

The hack also affected "employees of the BBC, British Airways, oil giant Shell, and state governments in Minnesota and Illinois, among others," according to the report.

Now, the news outlet reports millions of Louisiana and Oregon residents have also been impacted.

However, according to CNN, "the states did not blame anyone in particular for the hack, but federal officials have attributed a broader hacking campaign using the same vulnerability to a Russian ransomware gang."

The outlet reported Thursday, "'Russian hackers' who were 'first to exploit the vulnerability,' took 'credit for numerous other victims in the hacking campaign,' but it is 'unclear' whether they launched the attack, as 'experts say other groups may now have access to software code needed to conduct attacks.'"

CNN reports:

The data exposed in the breach of the Oregon and Louisiana motor vehicle departments may include Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers, prompting state authorities to advise their residents on how they can protect themselves from identity fraud.

Furthermore, authorities confirmed to CNN, "the cyberattack has affected 3.5 million Oregonians with driver’s licenses or state ID cards, and anyone with that documentation in Louisiana."

Louisiana governor's office senior staffer, Casey Tingle, emphasized, "more than 6 million records were compromised while noting that that number is duplicative because some people have both vehicle registrations and a driver's license."
