Push Notification

During his four months back in the White House, President Donald Trump has issued countless executive orders — some of which are being blocked, at least temporarily, by federal judges.

Trump and his MAGA allies, from Vice President JD Vance to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, are claiming that the federal courts have no business blocking his orders and are failing to respect the executive powers he enjoys as president. But Trump's critics, both left and right, are responding that Trump, Vance and Bondi need to read the U.S. Constitution — which lays out the role that the federal government's judicial and legislative branches play in the United States' system of checks and balances.

One of those critics on the right is attorney George Conway, a Never Trump conservative and the president of the Society for the Rule of Law.

During a Sunday morning, June 1 appearance on MSNBC's "The Weekend," Conway attacked Trump's rants against federal judges — some of whom are conservatives — as disingenuous and self-serving.

Conway told an MSNBC panel, "This is lying hypocrisy on the part of the (Trump) Administration, which is nothing new. If, for example, let's take the trade decision, the tariff decision. If, let's say, President Kamala Harris were a nutjob and she enacted a bunch of tariffs to please organized labor, let's say, and that had happened, we would have had like, 15 conservatives lawsuits brought everywhere in the country. And actually, it would have been in the same court. And that court would have ruled exactly the same way. And the Republicans would be playing yay, yay, yay, yay."

Host Jonathan Capehart noted how angry Trump is with the Federalist Society, a right-wing legal group that Trump supported in the past. And Conway doesn't find that flip-flop at all surprising.

The conservative attorney argued, "This is not about the law. It's not about communist judges. It's about Donald Trump getting what he wants….. Courts are saying: Wait a minute, you can't ignore all these statutes…. The courts are saying: wait a minute, you can't make stuff up, you can't ignore statutes."
