Fani Willis speaks out about racist death threats and 'bold-faced lie' following Trump indictment

Since announcing, in August, her criminal prosecution of former President Donald Trump and a long list of co-defendants, Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis was inundated with death threats from Trump supporters — some of them overtly racist. Willis was threatened before the indictment, but the threats escalated after her announcement.

Some MAGA Republicans in the Georgia State Legislature, meanwhile, have been trying to get her impeached as DA — a movement that conservative two-term Republican Gov. Brian Kemp opposes and has pushed back against.

Willis, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), addressed the attacks against her during a closed-door fundraiser on Tuesday, October 17.

The Georgia prosecutor alleges that Trump and his co-defendants violated RICO laws when they tried to overturn the 2020 election results in her state. Trump, according to Willis' case, knows that he lost Georgia to now-President Joe Biden but conspired to stay in the White House anyway.

Willis, AJC reports, told the Atlanta crowd, "You have these personal moments, when you're like, 'Why am I being personally attacked, and all I'm out here trying to do is my job?’ And in the reading of that scripture, what it told me is: you ain't special. That if you are a leader and you're put in a position where people are going to lie on you, and they're going to attack you, you have to still do what is the mission. And the mission here is we keep society safe, that everyone is equal, and that the law is protected."

The Fulton County DA also referenced a "bold-faced lie" against her that Trump has been spreading.

Trump has claimed, without evidence, that Willis had a sexual affair with a 17-year-old gang member — something he has offered zero evidence of.

Willis told attendees, "If you are a leader, you're going to be attacked. There are some days I'm human and I'm really angry — or I'm hurt that somebody would tell a bold-faced lie on me…. I think the craziest is I was sleeping with a gangbanger. I'm like, a 17-year-old? Like, what? I like them old! What are you talking about?"
