'Bonafide fake Republican': Ex-GA GOP Lt. Gov. slams Trump for lying 'about protecting the border'

Former Republican Lieutenant Governor Geoffrey Duncan — who last month endorsed Kamala Harris for president — on Thursday slammed Donald Trump for his failure to keep many promises on issues ranging from the economy to the US-Mexico border.

As Duncan joined CNN's Brianna Keilar to discuss whether Democrats should focus on the economy in their efforts to gain votes from Republicans, the former GOP leader insisted: "The economy is a tale of two stories. If you're somebody in your 50s or 60s looking forward to retirement, your 401K is worth more than it's ever been, your house is worth more than it's ever been — but your groceries are also more than they've ever been" — then the economy is worth discussing.

"But look, both parties are guilty of inflationary pressure," Duncan added.

"I mean, [former President] Donald Trump spent $8 trillion we didn't have that he promised he wouldn't do. [President] Joe Biden is going to — at the end of his term — spend a little more than $8 trillion. And so we've got to go to work. That's one of these issues with the Republican Party looking forward with a GOP 2.0. We've got to be better at actually delivering on the promises we actually make."

The former Georgia leader then took aim at Republican House and Senate leaders' decision to kill the bipartisan border bill earlier this year because of Trump's influence.

"Donald Trump — he's a bonafide fake Republican," Duncan emphasized.

"He lied about protecting the border. He had lots of strong rhetoric. He's scared South America away from coming across the border, but he built 20 miles or 2% of the border with a wall. That was about a photo shoot. That was about a political opportunity. That wasn't about actual border security."
