Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California), battling complications from shingles, has asked to be temporarily replaced on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Among Democrats, there are different views on whether or not the 89-year-old senator — who isn't seeking reelection — should or shouldn't finish the rest of her term. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) has called for Feinstein to resign, but another well-known California Democrat, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, considers calls for Feinstein's resignation sexist.

Pelosi commented that older male senators typically aren't asked to resign when they face health problems.

"I've never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way," Pelosi told reporters on Wednesday, April 12.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, discussed Feinstein's situation during a mid-April appearance on CNN. The centrist Democrat told host Kaitlan Collins that she would like to give Feinstein a chance to "come back" if possible. But she expressed worries about Feinstein being gone too long.

"I want to see what happens in the next month or so," Klobuchar told Collins. "You give her that time to be able to come back, but if she can't come back month after month after month with this close Senate, that's not going to just going to hurt California — it's going to be an issue for the country."

Klobuchar added, "So, we take her at her word she's coming back. Let's see what the date is, and what date she tells Sen. (Chuck) Schumer. But for right now, she really made the right decision to step aside from the (Senate Judiciary) Committee."
