'Ridiculous waste of time': TX Republican draws brutal mockery for campaign to rename steak

Right-wing pundits, including those on Fox News and Fox Business, repeatedly attack and ridicule liberals and progressives for language-policing. But the right also has a history of doing the same thing.

During George W. Bush's presidency, Republicans famously wanted to rename French fries "freedom fries." And Fox News pundits insisted that the term "homicide bomber" should replace "suicide bomber," although "homicide bomber" never really caught on.

Now, in 2025, President Donald Trump is banning an Associated Press (AP) reporter from White House events for refusing to use "Gulf of America" in place of "Gulf of Mexico." And Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is waging a campaign to rename the "New York strip" of steak the "Texas strip."

The Guardian's Ramon Antonio Vargas, in an article published on March 3, reports, "Dan Patrick announced, on Friday, (February 28), on social media that he intended to go to Texas' senate and work with lawmakers to pass a resolution favoring the switch — which would not carry the force of law but nonetheless would amount to a substantial statement of legislative support."

Vargas adds, "Patrick's announcement made it a point to allude to the Gulf of Mexico, which was ordered renamed to the Gulf of America by an executive order issued by Donald Trump early in the Republican’s second U.S. presidency."

Patrick said that his "simple resolution will help better market Texas beef." But Vargas notes that the Texas lieutenant governor is drawing brutal mockery from social media users.

One of them sarcastically posted, "Glad to see you're focused on the crucial issues plaguing your constituents. Very important cause here and not at all ridiculous or a waste of time.”
