When conservative Marco Rubio left the U.S. Senate to serve as secretary of state in the second Trump Administration, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis chose then-Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to temporarily fill the seat. But a special election will be held, and Rep. Cory Mill (R-Florida) plans to run.

If he runs, Mills may need to answer questions about an alleged simple assault being reported by NOTUS.

NOTUS reporter Violet Jira, in an article published on February 21, explains, " Washington, D.C.'s police department is investigating Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida for an alleged assault after an incident was reported at a residential address two miles west of the U.S. Capitol, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to NOTUS. MPD said officers responded to a report of an assault around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19."

Jira adds, "According to the incident report obtained by NOTUS, there is an active criminal investigation underway for simple assault."

Jira notes that although an incident report "does not name Mills," the MPD "confirmed the Florida lawmaker was under investigation for assault."

On Thursday night, February 20, the MPD told NOTUS, "Once MPD leadership became aware of this matter, there was an immediate review of our initial response to ensure all procedures were followed. MPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is currently investigating this matter.”

Jira describes Mills as a "staunch ally of President Donald Trump," adding that the Florida congressman is "currently the subject of a House ethics investigation for a matter that was submitted to the House Committee on Ethics in August of last year."
