A federal grand jury formally indicted former FBI Director James Comey Thursday evening on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Comey is now the first high‑ranking government official to face criminal charges linked to President Donald Trump’s longstanding grievances over the 2016 Russia probe. The indictment arrives amid intensifying pressure from Trump, who has repeatedly pushed Attorney General Pam Bondi to target political rivals.

In a post on his Truth Social platform following the indictment, he declared, “JUSTICE IN AMERICA! One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to is James Comey, the former Corrupt Head of the FBI.”

By accusing Comey, the Justice Department signals that it is willing to take aggressive legal action against a longstanding adversary of the president. But the case is fraught with controversy, as critics have repeatedly warned it could represent a dangerous politicization of the Department of Justice.

Comey, who was dismissed by Trump in 2017, denied wrongdoing and defended his record in a video posted to his official Instagram account.

Prosecutors say the charges stem from his 2020 congressional testimony, not from the core of the Russia investigation itself.

In a post on the social platform X, Bondi wrote: “No one is above the law. Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”

Meanwhile, Troy Edwards, Comey’s son-in-law and a federal prosecutor, resigned shortly after the indictment was announced, citing his duty to the Constitution.

The indictment has been denounced by Trump’s critics, including several legal commentators.

Former Rep Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) wrote: “Wow. Absolutely thin and garbage. The indictment was the punishment but zero chance he is convicted. GOP needs to remember they only have power 3 more years. That goes fast.”

Writer Kristen Johnson said: “Legal scholar here, if the entire indictment can fit in a tweet, you may not have the strongest case.”

Former Biden staffer Andrew Bates wrote: “‘No one is above the law,’ says an attorney general who is doing a great job representing the interests of Donald Trump, Ghislaine Maxwell, the Epstein estate, Qatar, and January 6th felons who beat cops. This corruption puts everyone in danger and drives prices even higher.”
