With Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis having ended his presidential campaign and formally endorsed Donald Trump, the 2024 GOP presidential primary is down to two candidates: frontrunner Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. And with Trump way ahead of Haley in countless polls, the election is shaping up to be a rematch between Trump and Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden.

During a scathing commentary on his HBO show "Real Time," political comedian Bill Maher slammed Trump's frontrunner status as a prime example of the "insanity" plaguing the United States this election year. Maher, however, was critical of parts of the left as well, including activists who have demonstrated in favor of the far-right Islamist group Hamas.

Maher told viewers, "For 2024, America has to go back on its meds…. Let's make this the year of sanity. Everybody thinks we've gone bonkers. And a lot of it is because the far ends on both left and right have gotten way too much attention."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?

Slamming Trump, Maher argued, "Probably the first thing on my and most people's list of insanity is that this guy is going to be president again. It feels surreal that we're in court everyday trying to prove that Trump wanted to overturn the election while he's on the campaign trail everyday telling everyone they should have overturned the election."

Maher added, "It also strikes normal people as insane that Trump fans are perfectly OK with the fact that he was recently asked if he wanted to be a dictator, and he did not say no. Neither did his lawyer say no when a judge asked him: Could a president who was not impeached order SEAL Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? The lawyer's answer was a qualified yes."

The "Real Time" host also railed against university presidents who lost their jobs following their comments on antisemitism on campus.

Maher argued, "Neither should it have been difficult when presidents of elite colleges were asked if it's OK to call for the genocide of Jews, and they couldn't just say: F*** no. Can't anybody just say 'F*** no' anymore?.... Really, we can't come to some sort of middle ground on any issue?"

Maher continued, "Socially liberal but not stupid woke? Fiscally insane but not cruel? Is this really that hard?.... A terrorist organization that treats women like slaves invaded Israel last October and shot hundreds of young people at a musical festival in the desert — and now, America's streets are full of parades in support of the shooters, led by the exact kind of people who would be at a music festival in the desert."
