'This ends one of two ways': Biden plans offensive against GOPers who tanked border bill

A combination of Democrats and Never Trump conservatives, including MSNBC's Joe Scarborough, have been lambasting House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) for saying that a bipartisan deal linking border security with military aid to Ukraine is "dead on arrival" if it survives in the U.S. Senate and reaches the U.S. House of Representatives.

Scarborough has been slamming MAGA Republicans for rejecting a bill that, the former GOP congressman argues, is very tough from a border security standpoint. And President Joe Biden is frustrated as well.

According to NBC News' Mike Memoli, the president would have preferred a bipartisan border compromise. But Biden's advisers believe that if the bill fails, that would be a useful talking point to bash Republicans with.

A Biden adviser, quoted anonymously, told NBC News, "This ends one of two ways. One, the strongest border legislation in decades passes and everyone wins — most importantly, the American people. Or two, MAGA Republicans kill this breakthrough for expressly political reasons.… in which case, the American people lose and the Republicans who opposed it get blasted every time they say 'border' for years."

Biden has noted former President Donald Trump's opposition to the bipartisan bill, arguing that Trump's attacks are strictly political — not motivated by a genuine concern for border security.

Memoli quotes Biden as saying, "I understand the former president is desperately trying to stop this bill, because he’s not interested in solving the border problem. He wants a political issue to run against me."
