House Democrat reminds Republicans: 'A Trump-appointed US attorney' is investigating Hunter Biden

United States Representative Dan Goldman (D-New York) tells CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday's edition of State of the Union that the "critical distinction" between the two major political parties is how each is treating the probes into twice-impeached thrice-indicted former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden's son Hunter.

Attorney General Merrick Garland's Friday selection of David C. Weiss of the District Court for the District of Delaware as special counsel in the Hunter Biden inquiry "is just another reflection of the true independence of this Department of Justice," Goldman says.

"A Trump-appointed US attorney is investigating the president's son," Goldman points out. "That is pretty remarkable."

Goldman stresses the difference between how Democrats and the GOP are handling things.

"You don't hear from the other side a respect for the fact that Joe Biden has stayed out of this investigation, and so I defer to Merrick Garland and David Weiss," he explains.

"If Hunter Biden has committed crimes, he should be charged with them," Goldman adds. "I'm a Democrat saying that you don't hear any currently elected Republicans saying that if Donald Trump committed crimes, he should be charged with them and held accountable. And that's a critical distinction that the public needs to understand."
