Georgia GOP lawmaker presses White House for 'original, unaltered' Jan. 6 transcripts: report

A Georgia lawmaker spearheading the Republican-led House subcommittee's probe into the House Jan. 6 committee launched earlier this year, is demanding that the White House "return several transcripts of interviews conducted by" the now-defunct panel "without alteration or redaction," according to an exclusive NBC News report.
In a letter sent Friday, August 25, and obtained by NBC, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA 11th district) wrote, "Once these records, including transcripts of testimony from the Secret Service agents and employees, have been returned in their original, unaltered format, I am willing to discuss any redactions you believe are necessary prior to these records being released publicly."
Per the exclusive report, "Loudermilk originally wrote to the White House on Aug. 8 to request the return of 'all original documents and records related to the events of January 6, 2021, that the White House has that originated from the Select Committee.'"

According to NBC, the Republican congressman also wrote "that the White House should first turn over the transcripts without redactions and then work with his subcommittee to determine if any are needed."
Emphasizing that "anything other than receiving original, unredacted copies is unacceptable," he told NBC, "If the White House sends redacted documents, we will respond appropriately to ensure we get the full original copies. The White House does not own these records, the House does. This was testimony given to a House Committee — not just records from an executive branch agency."
NBC reported earlier this year that Loudermilk is an ex-President Donald "Trump ally who had his own run-in with the Jan. 6 committee," as "the panel accused Loudermilk of giving tours of the Capitol in the days leading up to the riot."
