Following the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88, the Vatican is deciding who will take over the position. U.S. President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, April 29, joked that his "number one choice" for the position would be himself.

Trump, who was raised Presbyterian, has never expressed any interest in converting to Catholicism. But Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), a former Trump critic turned devoted ally, humorously promoted the idea of Trump becoming pope in an April 29 post on X, formerly Twitter.

Graham tweeted, "I was excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope. This would truly be a dark horse candidate, but I would ask the papal conclave and Catholic faithful to keep an open mind about this possibility! The first Pope-U.S. President combination has many upsides. Watching for white smoke…. Trump MMXXVIII!"

Although Graham was being humorous, some MAGA Republicans are taking the idea seriously. Critics of Trump and Graham, however, see it as an example of how cultish Trump has made the GOP.

MAGA Republican Rob Sullivan, who is Catholic, tweeted, "Pope, King, President Trump can do it all. Fact!"

But many responses to Graham's tweet were highly critical of him.

The conservative Republicans Against Trump asked Graham, "Are you okay?"

Journalist Tom Mallory wrote, "A soul is a terrible thing to squander, Senator. You only have one.

X user Jeff Tiedrich posted, "are you high right now."

Another X user, Alexandra Eaton, said of Trump, "He can't be Pope, he fathered children."

International affairs specialist Anna Komsa tweeted, "The mere thought is deeply disturbing. Like a cheap remake of the Borgias
