'Put somebody with a gun': Herschel Walker reveals his plan to improve American schools
Republican United States Senate nominee Herschel Walker of Georgia on Monday shared his vision of how the American education system can be improved. His remarks followed reports that testing scores plummeted during the COVID-19 pandemic. But in his speech, Walker blamed President Joe Biden and incumbent Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock – neither of whom were in power when schools were initially shuttered at the height of the coronavirus crisis in 2020 under former President Donald Trump – for the learning deficits that millions of students are experiencing.
"And then they're talking about our kids. I'm gonna tell you the reason they're going to your kids right now. I dunno if you've seen it, but our kids are behind right now. They're behind because Senator Warnock and Joe Biden, that they decided to not let our kids go to school," Walker said.
"They had the money. They had the resources to get our kids back to school but they held them out. Now, kids are behind," Walker stated, adding that "they're behind because they want to teach critical race theory." That too is false. Critical race theory is taught at the college level. "They want to teach gender ideology," Walker declared, again regurgitating a common right-wing talking point that has no factual basis.
Continuing on, Walker revealed his recommendation for preventing school shootings. "And they also, I'm not, put a security guard, you know, schoolhouse. Put somebody with a gun, a police officer in our schoolhouse," he said.
Walker then accused the Internal Revenue Service of plotting to target his constituents – which is another conservative fallacy – and that the agency has decision-making power over how schools run their athletic programs (it does not).
"Don't teach 'em that men in women's sports. Protect our kids. And the way you can do it is get rid of those 87,000 IRS agents that's gonna go after you. But yeah, but yet, they told me I didn't know what I was talking about," Walker declared. "But I do know what I was talking about."
