Several top figures inside the Kremlin have threatened to attack Alaska in retaliation to sanctions imposed upon Russia over its barbaric invasion of Ukraine.

"Russia’s lower house speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin, warned the United States ought to hesitate when seizing or freezing Russian assets abroad, and instead ought to remember that Alaska previously belonged to Russia," The Daily Beast reported on Wednesday.

The Alaskan territory was purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million – roughly $142 million today when adjusted for inflation – as part of a treaty that checked Russia's trade expansion toward the American Pacific Northwest.

“Let America always remember, there is a part of [Russian] territory: Alaska,” Volodin said, per the Ukrainian broadcasting station Hromadske International. “So when they start trying to dispose of our resources abroad, before they do it, let them think: we also have something to return.”

Other lawmakers in Moscow issued various additional ultimatums.

"State Duma Vice Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy proposed holding a referendum in Alaska, Volodin said, according to RBC," noted The Daily Beast. "Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, took the threats even further, and hinted at nuclear escalation."

Medvedev was quoted by the Associated Press as having warned that the “idea to punish a country with the largest nuclear potential is absurd and potentially creates the threat to mankind’s existence."

Medvedev, who was president of Russia prior to Vladimir Putin, also criticized the United States over its history of imperialism and genocide, despite Russia acting in the same manner toward its Western neighbor.

"The entire US history since the times of subjugation of the native Indian population represents a series of bloody wars," Medvedev said. "The US and its useless stooges should remember the words of the Bible: Do not judge and you will not be judged... so that the great day of His wrath doesn’t come to their home one day.”

Russia's atomic saber-rattling has become a repeated occurrence since Putin commenced his "special military operation" on February 24th. But the 69-year-old autocrat gravely miscalculated the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's commitment to supporting democratic nations such as Ukraine. An expansion of the defensive alliance is a development that Putin has sought to prevent throughout his entire career. His unprovoked war on Ukraine, however, has led to the opposite.

Last month, Sweden and Finland – which shares an 830-mile border with Russia – abandoned their decades-long policies of neutrality and jointly applied for NATO membership.
