George Conway explains why Mazars dumping Donald Trump is a disaster for the former president

On Monday afternoon, The New York Times reported that former President Donald Trump’s longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA, ditched him as a client, “saying it could no longer stand behind a decade of annual financial statements it prepared for the Trump Organization, court documents show.”
Mazars’ legally loud move is the latest tendril extending from the palette of civil and criminal investigations into Trump’s personal business practices by New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York City District Attorney Alvin Bragg, both of whom are amassing breadcrumbs suggesting that Trump and his associates engaged in schemes to defraud lending institutions and evade taxes.
“As the most recent filings demonstrate, the evidence continues to mount showing that Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization used fraudulent and misleading financial statements to obtain economic benefit,” James said in a statement to the Times. “There should be no doubt that this is a lawful investigation and that we have legitimate reason to seek testimony from Donald J. Trump, Donald J. Trump Jr., and Ivanka Trump.”
After the news broke and had permeated the wires, conservative attorney and Never Trumper George Conway explained in a Twitter thread why Mazars abandoning Trump is really bad news for the irascible ex-reality television show host.
Conway began by translating the legalese buried within the court filings obtained by the Times.
The "’decision regarding the financial statements’=they are false because you lied, ‘totality of the circumstances’=the D.A. is serious, ‘non-waivable conflict of interest’=we are now on team D.A., and ‘not able to provide new work product’=sorry we're not going to jail for you,” he wrote.

“For any business (including a privately-held one) that has outside financing or investors, having your financial statements (let alone 10 years' worth!) pulled by your accountants is just about the most calamitous thing that could happen to it, other than perhaps being indicted,” Conway continued, adding that “this is worse for him than getting impeached twice.”

Recall that Trump was acquitted by Republicans in the United States Senate following two separate impeachment trials. To date, he has not faced any accountability for the high crimes and misdemeanors for which he was charged by Congress.
Conway also took note of the Bates number on the bottom of Mazars’ letter, which he believes indicates that the firm has handed over hundreds of thousands of documents to New York investigators.
“Check out the Bates number on the Mazars letter,” Conway said. “It suggests that the accountants have produced at least 525,838 pages of material to prosecutors.”
