Wisconsin Democrat slams GOP congressman for 'seemingly assisting' fake electors after 2020 presidential race
Wisconsin is one of the states where MAGA Republicans, following the 2020 election, circulated fake Electoral College documents making the bogus claim that Donald Trump, not Joe Biden, won the state. Now, Wisconsin State Sen. Chris Larson is slamming U.S. Rep. Scott L. Fitzgerald — who formerly served as majority leader in the Wisconsin State Senate — for “seemingly assisting” the fake electors.
In a press release issued by Larson’s office on January 25, the Democratic lawmaker is quoted as saying, “If Congressman Fitzgerald did indeed provide the meeting space in our State Capitol where 10 partisans conspired to defraud our democracy, he must explain why he did so. The Congressman owes it to his constituents and the American people at large to condemn the actions of the fraudulent GOP electors.”
Larson continues, “Failing to do so is an admission that he supports their attempt to overthrow the legitimate election of President Biden, including Wisconsin, which Biden won by nearly 21,000 votes. As lawmakers, we have a special responsibility to respect the outcome of our elections, and by seemingly assisting those who would undermine that process, Congressman Fitzgerald will have committed acts that betray the oath he swore when he took office.”
Now 58, Fitzgerald served in the Wisconsin State Senate during the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives via Wisconsin’s 5th Congressional District in 2020. He was sworn into the U.S. House on January 3, 2021, and three days later, he refused to vote in favor of certifying Biden’s Electoral College victory during a joint session of Congress.
That session was violently interrupted by the insurrectionist attack on the U.S. Capitol Building.
Larson’s January 25 press release also quotes him as saying, “Overturning a presidential election and imperiling our democracy is no small matter. Anyone and everyone involved must be held accountable or we risk inviting it to happen again, facilitating the end of our democratic republic. Wisconsin remembers that after the deadly attack on our nation’s Capitol on January 6th, 2021, Rep. Fitzgerald voted against certifying the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States.”
