Watch: These Trump supporters still blame Democrats, the FBI for the Jan. 6 riot

This Thursday, January 6 will mark the one-year anniversary of the Capitol insurrection, which found far-right supporters of then-President Donald Trump violently attacking the U.S. Capitol Building in the hope of stopping Congress from certifying now-President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory. Trump’s false claims of widespread voter fraud did a lot to whip the rioters into a frenzy, but CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, in recent interviews with Trump supporters, has found that they continue to give him a pass on the violence that rocked Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021.
Sullivan told his CNN colleagues, “There's a concerted and sophisticated effort ever since the attack here in Washington a year ago to warp Americans’ understanding of what happened on that day, and in many cases, that disinformation campaign is working.”
CNN went on to illustrate Sullivan’s point by airing some of his interviews with Trump supporters. One of them, a woman named Lisa, told Sullivan, “The January 6 attack was not the Republicans nor Trump…. The Democrats were behind it all. They’re the ones that caused it all.... There is no way that a Republican would act that way, and there is no way that Trump had anything to do with what happened on January 6.”
When O’Sullivan, who is originally from Ireland, asked Lisa, “What about all the Trump supporters that have been charged and indicted?,” she responded, “Because it’s all Democratic judges and people that were on the take from the Democrats.”
Another female Trump supporter told O’Sullivan, “I think the reporting of it is a giant hoax.” And Trump supporter Marge Mathiew told the CNN reporter, “We are very peaceful people. So, it was a total set-up to me. It was the FBI that set it up. I don't believe that they were Trump supporters that did that.”
When O’Sullivan asked Trump supporter Jeanie Johnson if she really believes “the whole thing” was a “setup,” she responded, “I do, I do. Because Trump won the election. They have proven it over and over again.”
Larry, another Trump supporter, told O’Sullivan, “I really don't think Trump had much to do with it, and people that were supporters for him — some were involved, but I think they were enticed by the FBI and by, you know, undercover agents.”’
O’Sullivan recalled that when he interviewed Trump supporters in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021, some of them were applauding the attack on the Capitol Building even though they didn’t participate in the attack. Trump supporter Todd Possett told O’Sullivan, “I absolutely stand 100% behind what happened here today. 1000%. And it’s terrible how this election was stolen.”
