Madison Cawthorn and Donald Trump have an ‘unusual strategy’ to win House seats in North Carolina: report

During Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s months in the U.S. House of Representatives, the 26-year-old freshman congressman has made it abundantly clear that he is very much a Donald Trump loyalist and a far-right MAGA type of Republican —and according to Ashville, North Carolina’s WLOS-TV Channel 13 (an ABC-affiliated station), Cawthorn and Trump are collaborating on an “unusual strategy” that Cawthorn “hopes wins congressional seats for Republicans in North Carolina.”

WLOS’ Red Hodge reports, “Congressman Madison Cawthorn met, over the weekend, with former President Trump at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida, during which a flyer was revealed which shows Cawthorn's choices for Republican-leaning congressional districts.”

Dr. Chris Cooper, a political science/public affairs professor at Western Carolina University, told WLOS that the flyer was described as “Congressman Cawthorn’s plan for North Carolina.” And Cooper explained why Cawthorn’s plan is controversial in the southern state.

Cooper told WLOS, “Not only is Cawthorn saying, 'These are the people I would endorse,' but 'These are the districts that I want those people to run in.' I think it’s that last part that makes this so unprecedented. The state Republican Party obviously had their own plans for some of those seats.”

According to Cooper, the far-right Cawthorn/Trump picks are likely to meet some resistance from establishment Republicans in North Carolina. Nonetheless, Cooper told WLOS, “I think what it tells us is that President Donald Trump is still the de-facto leader of the Republican Party.”

Myrna Campbell, who chairs the Haywood County Democratic Party in North Carolina, is high critical of Cawthorn’s move.

“The emphasis is not on governing,” Campbell told WLOS. “It’s just: who’s loyal to Trump.”
