Trump friend and Newsmax CEO comes out with surprising praise of Biden

Newsmax TV, the cable news outlet that prides itself on being more right-wing and more pro-Trump than Fox News, has often been highly critical of President Joe Biden. But Newsmax Media CEO Christopher Ruddy, a personal friend of Trump praises Biden's COVID-19 vaccination campaign as a major success in an op-ed for Newsmax's website.

Ruddy's article was published on the six-month anniversary of Biden's presidency. It was half a year ago, on January 20, that former President Donald Trump moved out of the White House, Biden was sworn in as president and former U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris was sworn in as vice president. Throughout his presidency, Biden has been quite aggressive when it comes to encouraging vaccination for COVID-19 — and Ruddy applauds that aggression in his op-ed.

"As a journalist, I believe in giving credit where it's due," the 56-year-old Newsmax Media CEO explains. "Six months into his administration, President Joe Biden should be applauded for making a huge dent in the COVID pandemic. He inherited an effective vaccine from President Donald Trump, took it into his arms, and ran with it."

Biden has been stressing that the more widespread vaccination for COVID-19 becomes in the United States, the sooner Americans will be able to achieve some type of herd immunity — and the sooner they will be able to get back to normal.

The president's goal was for 70% of U.S.-based adults to be at least partially vaccinated for COVID-19 by the 4th of July — a goal that Biden fell short of, but not by much. On July 5, National Public Radio reported that 67% of adults in the United States have been either partially or wholly vaccinated for COVID-19. Partial vaccination means having received the first dose but not the second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines; someone who receives the one-part Johnson & Johnson vaccine is said to be fully vaccinated (this journalist was fully vaccinated for COVID-19 via Moderna's vaccine earlier this year).

Quite a few bogus anti-vaxxer claims have come from right-wing media outlets, but Ruddy notes that he has "gotten the Pfizer vaccine" — and urges others to get vaccinated as well.

"Deaths caused by the coronavirus have fallen to record lows, with almost negligible side effects to those vaccinated," Ruddy notes. "At Newsmax, we have strongly advocated for the public to be vaccinated. The many medical experts who have appeared on our network have been near unanimous in support of the vaccine."

Ruddy laments that the late Republican activist and one-time Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain was among the COVID-19 fatalities in 2020.

"There's no question in my mind, countless lives would have been saved if the vaccine was available earlier," Ruddy writes. "I think of my friend, the late Herman Cain, who entered the hospital the same week his new weekly show began airing on Newsmax. In a great loss to the country, he passed away shortly thereafter."

Although slightly over two-thirds of U.S.-based adults have been at least partially vaccinated for COVID-19, Biden would like to get that number much higher. His challenge is persuading the unvaccinated to get vaccinated.

"For the moment, we as Americans can applaud President Biden's success with the vaccine rollout," Ruddy writes. "It is saving countless lives — and that is a good thing."
