Democrats are increasingly pushing for impeachment as Trump follows Nixon's path: report
ABC News

A new report from the Washington Post documents the increasing desire among House Democrats to move forward with impeachment as President Donald Trump goes all in on stonewalling tactics.

The Democratic investigators in the House are frustrated with the president's dismissal of their constitutional duty of oversight, and they're eager to push House Speaker Nancy Pelosi out of her complacency and into a new aggressive posture. Leaking their displeasure to the Post, it would seem, is part of this effort — showing cracks in the iron grip with which the speaker controls her caucus.

The Post explained:

The chairmen and members of the six panels investigating the president are increasingly angered by the White House’s unwillingness to comply as they carry out their oversight role, according to several House Democratic officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter freely. But that anger extends into the ranks of Pelosi’s team as well, according to multiple leadership officials.

It also noted that Trump's refusal to cooperate with the investigations is in accord with President Richard Nixon's behavior when he was being investigated by the House. When the House Judiciary Committee eventually voted on articles of impeachment for Nixon, the behavior was cited as one of the offenses:

In July 1974, when the House Judiciary Committee passed three articles of impeachment against President Richard M. Nixon, one of the charges leveled against him was “contempt of Congress,” while the third article said Nixon had “failed without lawful cause or excuse to produce papers and things as directed by duly authorized subpoenas” and “willfully disobeyed such subpoenas.”

Even if impeachment is successful in the House, there are few signs that there would be a single Republican vote in the Senate to remove the president — let alone the 20 that would be needed. But it still might be the right thing to do, publicizing the extent of Trump's wrongs and making it clear that Democrats find his criminal behavior unacceptable.
