A green, leafy, biodegradable alternative to plastic has people going bananas
A supermarket was spotted opting out of using plastic to wrap their produce. Instead they are choosing to use something biodegradable, aesthetically beautiful, non-toxic, waterproof and much cheaper than plastic. They are bundling their fruits and vegetables with banana leaves, and people are loving it.
The leaves, which are also humidity-resistant, are wrapped around the produce and tied together with flexible bamboo. Since banana leaves are so massive in the tropics, they are available for free, which saves supermarket owners the expense of plastic. It’s a win-win-win for store owners, the planet and the earth-conscious consumers who can also use the leaves for compost.
This is not a brand new idea. Produce vendors in tropical areas have used banana leaves to hold their products together for decades. But now the earth-friendly greens are being used in international supermarkets—a big step forward.
The photos of leaf-wrapped produce below are now being shared by thousands and viewed by millions after a realty company Perfect Homes ChiangMai published the images on their facebook page. They took the pics at a local branch of Rimping Supermarket.
Enthusiastic comments came from folks around the world.
“Congratulations on leading the way”, “logical and practical”, “brilliant idea” and “ingenious” were written in support. While others gushed about the added visual appeal of the natural wrapping saying “This is actually beautiful” and “Looks more [appetizing]; and being organic so biodegradable, another user weighed in with “Great compost for the garden”!
In a blog post, Perfect Homes says Chiang Mai still has a long way to go to conquer its plastic problem, but this is a step in a positive direction.
“And if it means just one less plastic bag littering the landscapes, fouling the waterways and choking the storm drains in this fair [country] of ours, then we reckon it was well worth us posting.”
Agreed and cheers to all companies and corporations who take the green road.
With that, I leaf you with some tutti-frutti, banana happy from Carmen Miranda in the 20th Century Fox film, The Gangs All Here.
Don’t you just love her?
