'Mexico Will NEVER Pay for a Wall': Mexican President Offers a Real-Time Rebuke to Trump's Ridiculous Campaign Speech
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto offered a speedy rebuke to President Donald Trump's campaign rally Tuesday night, during which Trump revived one of his most ridiculous campaign promises.
"In the end, Mexico's paying for the wall," Trump told the crowd in Nashville, Tennesee. "They're going to pay for the wall, and they're going to enjoy it."
During the 2016 campaign, Trump made building a massive concrete wall across the U.S.-Mexico border a key promise. He also promised that Mexico would pay for it, though he offered vague assurances about how.
President @realDonaldTrump: NO. Mexico will NEVER pay for a wall. Not now, not ever. Sincerely, Mexico (all of us).— Enrique Peña Nieto (@Enrique Peña Nieto) 1527643523
The reply Tuesday night from Peña Nieto to Trump's renewal of that promise was fast and pointed — and on Trump's favorite medium, Twitter:The tweet quickly went viral, earning more than 13,000 retweets in under an hour.
Trump also claimed that construction on the wall has "already started," but this is, at best, misleading. While some prototypes have been built and funding has been allocated for repairs and improvements to existing areas of fencing around the border, nothing resembling the large, coast-to-coast wall Trump promised has begun.
