The Deeper Meaning in the Republican Sex Scandals

By Susie Bright, SusieBright.com. Posted July 19, 2007.

Another two gay-bashing, Klan-loving, pulpit-slurping Republicans have disgraced themselves. But there is much more we can learn from the improprieties of David Vitter and Bob Allen.

Another Gay-bashing, Klan-loving, Pulpit-Slurping, Republican has disgraced himself.

No, make that two.

Let's start with the Christian Coalition's favorite son, Louisiana senator David Vitter.

There's not enough Boudreaux Buttpaste in the world that can wipe-clean a career like Vitter's-- now better known as The Guy Who Frequents Prostitutes and Asks To Wear a Diaper.

Apparently the whores of New Orleans call him "Vitter the Shitter." And don't even ask about his love child -- who, one can only hope, is kept well-stocked with Pampers.

I hate the way a hypocrite like this can drag the good name of kinky sex through the mud.

Vitter refuses to resign, of course. He and his wife took the neo-Antoinette position at their recent press conference: "Let them eat shit."

David said God, and His Wife Wendy, were willing to move on -- and so should everyone else. After all, he still has plenty of gay marriages to wreck, and black voters to disenfranchise! Let the man get on with his work!

But his better half upstaged him. Wendy showed up for the cameras in a low-cut leopard print dress and giant hoop earrings, to say she's forgiven Davy for everything and it was time for the press to leave their family alone.

She needs more than sartorial assistance:

In 2000, Vitter was included in a Newhouse News Service story about the strain of congressional careers on families.

His wife, Wendy, was asked by the Newhouse reporter: If her husband were as unfaithful as Livingston or former President Bill Clinton, would she be as forgiving as Hillary Rodham Clinton?

"I'm a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary," Wendy Vitter told Newhouse News. "If he does something like that, I'm walking away with one thing, and it's not alimony, trust me."

"I think fear is a very good motivating factor in a marriage," she added. "Don't put fear down.

I'm scared.

Watch the campaign videos of Vitter's last election, where his wife asked him to change their baby's nappie.

Read Jon Swift's satire on how Gay Marriage Ruined Vitter's Life.

Follow the Diaper investigation, load by load.

Or maybe you've been turned into a pillar of salt and find yourself unable to move.

Don't worry, there's another distraction. Vitter is momentarily overshadowed by Congressman Bob Allen of Florida. Allen is such a pest at the men's public toilets that that it was only after the THIRD time (in an hour) that he waltzed in to make a play, that an undercover cop finally busted him for solicitation.

And gee, Bob was offering men $20 to go down on them. Jeff Gannon must be wrending his garments:

...The 48 year old Republican Representative was arrested today on second degree misdemeanor charges for solicitation for prostitution. And the twist is that he's a married man, and was asking an undercover cop in a men's room if he could pay him to give him a blowjob. It's so GOP!

Allen was out for a little afternoon delight and got nabbed at noon in Titusville, Florida. "Officers say they noticed Allen acting suspicious as he went in and out of the men's restroom 3 times. Minutes later, he solicited an undercover male officer inside the restroom, offering to perform oral sex for $20."

He was first elected in 2000 and lists "water sports" as a hobby on his official state website.

So many Americans wave their flags and post the 10 Commandments for all of the world to see, because they know neither patriotism nor religion. But, by showing 'signs', they hope others will think, "Now, that's a good American that believes in the USA and Jesus."

True patriots and true Christians are known by their actions and all of the 'wannabes' are known by their symbols.

The big problem: Most Americans are too ignorant to see the difference.

that had trouble reading this article? Normally Ms Bright is very readable, but I felt like the pacing made it rather difficult to get through.

Still, I'd never considered that people would support Republicans and want them to actively screw the poor because that would mean more minorities would get screwed than whites. It seems almost far-fetched, anyone have anecdotal experience with this?

BUT I have a couple of issues with the on-going scandals:

1) I am interested in them getting caught out only because it exposes their lying - usually to their wives and families and their hypocrisy - in terms of anti-sex policy. I have no problem with those who have and enjoy a lot of sex with a lot of different people. As long as they're telling the truth to those people and whoever else they're talking to.

2) Are you guys really sure that Larry Flynt is 'on our side'? I mean I want good to triumph over evil, not good-plus-Larry-Flynt to triumph over evil. If The-Democrats-And-Larry-Flynt win the presidency what are we going to do next? Give Mr Flynt an obscure wing of the white house and ask him to keep the noise down? Pick your friends wisely...

he'd pretty much be doing what southern men have been doing for 300 years--big yawn, no real scandal there. Once you're busted for diaper play, homo- or hetero-racial don't make no never mind. And I remain to be persuaded that gay-bashing is somehow code for nigger-baiting. Distasteful as both may be, they're not the same.

This is nothing new. There have been HUGE scandals in Europe recently over paedophilia rings in which, alledgedly, children have been even killed. This has happened recently in France, Belgium, Spain, and Italy. A couple of the scandals (very sick stuff with kidnapping, rape, incest, killings, etc) involved the police (low level) who 'killed themself' and investigation couldn't proceed. Or a patsy who claimed others are involved but the trial went secret and only he got convicted. Rich Brits, including some royals or peers, have been known for decades to have elaborate orgies (recall the 'man in the mask' controversy and for you young folks the movie 'scandal'.) Obviously the Catholic church has been abusing kids for decades, if not longer. Rich Brits are known to have affection for 'spanking' games. Then there is the 'Franklin Cover-up' and all the recent call-boy, prostitute, fake report Gannon, etc. One can only look to Rome or almost every other ancient culture and see how power corrupts. I think this is for several reasons:
1) positions of authority attract perverts. After all most normal people don't wish to dominate everyone, assert their 'will' on world, etc. They want to work, take care of the family, and relax. Having actual positive relations with others (as opposed to dominating) encourages the 'good' side of people as opposed to the 'bad' side. Being alone in your quest for domination lends you to be 'bad' and think of others as objects for your pleasure and will. Obviously there is abuse by poor people but, generally, they get caught and not to the level of the super-rich.

2) authorities use sexual (and other) types of actions for blackmail. Like the mob, they require some 'crime' to become a member of the club. This tests loyalty and ensures cooperation. It can be used for blackmail also. This is why the 'insiders' are 'never surprised' when these scandals break. You'll always hear about 'rumours have been floating for years in the cloakroom', etc. They release a scandal to take attention away from another event, as a power coup/struggle, or to punish a member who wasn't complying.

3) Power encourages more and more depravity, like a serial killer who 'escalates' or like a 'mob mentality' that leads a group to kill or rape when alone the person probably wouldn't do it. You get caught up in a group mentality. You also need more 'of a kick' to get your thrills.

First a disclaimer: I am biased. I support Susie with a $5.00 monthly contribuiton. If that shocks you, it's your problem.

The Senator can say and do any damn thing he pleases (or pleases his wife if that too is the case), and it is up his constituency to decide his political fate.

Where he and his wife stray is by their self-righteousness and outright lying about their own principles using the floor of the Senate as a stage. At that moment, he's fair game, (I emphasise "game") and he can and shold be nailed as the moral fraud and hippocrate (sp?)he is.

Are our politicans largely alike? I guess so, they are all human. Any first-stone throwers out there? It is the flagrant disregard of truth that is so shattering. My dear? There are hookers in DC? Again, I am shocked.

I wouldn't trade one Susie for a dozen of these phonies and the baggage they tote.

Honor is a big Southern thing

I am not against the South or Southern culture in its entirety—It definitely has some good qualities. The South, the North, the West, Midwest, Northwest, and Hawaii (I'm guessing) all have good parts and bad parts about them. I mean this kind of appalling stuff happens in all of the country's regions. Everywhere there are crimes and hypocrisies, good deeds and honesty. It should be noteworthy that honor, though it exists all over this land (I speak of good people, noble goals and high ideals that, indeed, still exist), is a particularly idiosyncratic ingredient of Southern culture.

These people have committed crimes against their wives, constituents, the country at large, and the God whom they purport to worship. This is indeed the worst crime: to invoke the name of the almighty to prop up their devious agenda, while actually blatantly betraying His will, judging and punishing others while releasing themselves from any responsibility or accountability.

This is not honor. This is far indeed from honor. I ask: how could this possible be accepted?

Columnists and bloggers are desoerately trying to fan this story into a big conflagration, and it ain't working. Why? Doesn't matter - so he frequented prostitutes. Big deal. Yawn. Now if Vitter WAS a KKK member, or something (Ms. Bright seems to engage in A LOT of sexism and race-baitng in implying that since he is from the South his supporters must ALL be KKK members) THIS would be an important story. But Vitter is just another unfaithful spouse. And Ms. Bright's article is a poorly written attempt at ... what, I'm not sure. Her staccato one sentence is a paragraph style is neither witty nor insightful. If this is the best that Alternet can offer in the name of "feminism," its about time to fold up the tent and pack it in. I used to read this site for intelligent thought-provoking articles. They are becoming fewer and further between, and pea-brained rants like this article are becoming the staple. I'd say about one out of five articles now are worth reading - a lot of trite garbage, like that article about struggling novelists in B.C. Please, what a bunch of sanctimonious pap about young novelists who have no idea of what it means to be an artist, what you have to sacrifice, and the struggles involved.

As soon as Tucker Carlson starts writing articles here, we'll know that the shark has been jumped - wait, these Susie Dim articles are proof enough of that. RIP Alternet.

Dear Ms. Bright,
And I thought it was the "dead woman" or the "live boy" that was the career killer in the good old boy South. Thanks for peeling off another onion skin.
BTW I use the term "race traitor" differently; it's when an a white appearing man who, when among his look a-likes says, "Excuse me, I may look white but I've got black ancestors." And who hasn't got them? As they say in law, "It's really difficult to prove a negative."
Keep up the good work.

If Vitter is found to have had so much as a chaste vanilla kiss with a black woman over 21, he will be crucified by the segregationist, white supremacist freaks who put him into office.

Sigh. Sad, but typical. Getting tired of being "the worst" and voting for "something different" is what lots of otherwise well-meaining folks in LA did. Getting slapped in the face by a senator with an apparent penchance for hypocrisy on social issues doesn't automatically put those people on mental par with the author, or anyone else who likes to put their fellows in a box labeled "___________ist".

Vitter won by a simple majority in the primary; he's first republican LA sent to the senate since radical reconstruction. My personal opinion is that our treasurer would probably have made a better senator for LA, but lots of folks voted for Vitter simply due to the dissatisfaction of LA being a Democratic stronghold that "fought" with Mississippi over the coveted place of being next to dead last in everything positive (education, income, health) and or being second in everything nasty (cancer, infant mortality, drop-out rate...). Folks came out in huge numbers (well, it's tough to ever get more than 50% of the electorate interested in national policy) to demand change. Coastal restoration (yes, people were talking about that before it became a cause de celeb amongst "progressives") was one of Vitter's strong points (with a voting record to prove it) for many folks. The fact that he's a fairly bright guy (hint: his academics are on par with President Clinton, suggesting that there may be something in that Oxford water...), as politicians go didn't work against him, either.

The assertion that the majority of the people in LA are what(ever) the author calls them lays her vast malicious and ignorance bare before us--a warty, smelly thing that definitely ought to be covered in civilized circles. Might I suggest a sheet? I think it would "work" well!

If Vitter is found to have had so much as a chaste vanilla kiss with a black woman over 21, he will be crucified by the segregationist, white supremacist freaks who put him into office.

There is a tiny sliver of truth to that ridiculous assertion. Bobby Jindal (R) would have had the "opportunity" to deal with Katrina had his real name not been Piyush, or had not the good ol' boy network that selected Blanco run with his given name (as a slur) every chance they got. In a very close governor's race, racism selected an ineffective, hand-wringing Democratic candidate who campaigned on the basis of being a grandma who luv'd babies, bless her little heart. That's the bed we made; that's the bed we lay in, for all the world to see.

If Vitter is found to have had so much as a chaste vanilla kiss with a black woman over 21, he will be crucified by the segregationist, white supremacist freaks who put him into office.

Meh. Maybe wallowing around the muck makes some feel good; pigs do it, after all. My understanding from the occasional oink I mistakenly get in ear-shot of, however, is that wallowing in the muck just makes one grunt unintelligibly. Suggestion for folks who share the author's stereotypical viewpoint of people strange to them (you know, the people you call "freaks"): if you elevate your thought process out of the pigpen, reason, objectivity, and a little understanding have a knack for inviting themselves back into your lives, and indeed, your musings.

It's time to make good on your promise and cut his dick off. Such will be a benefit to the people of America and the world. Maybe he will learn humility. Either way, his political career will be through - a dickless man cannot be taken seriously by the macho political Right.

Or perhaps she is his dominatrix. Considering his proclivities and her statement to the effect of castration, they might have such a dynamic in their relationship. If so, feel free to torture him for a while and take him out of the political game.

His wife, however, is ultimately a collaborator or enabler of his agenda. She is defending him now. If she does have sexual power over him, then she is either not using it to force his political actions toward a humane agenda, or she agrees with his politics and is therefore self-hating.

.. the deeper meaning is... poop jokes and the surprising revelation that Louisiana is actually still pretty racist??? That a number of folks in the Republican base are racist????

Of course, the deeper meaning is not that these folks want congressional approval for your sex life while claiming their illegal dalliances with prostitutes are a "family affair" (and I'm sure you could squeeze out a trite incest joke there, Suse.. after all.. you are talking about a southern family.. and as we all know from the stereotype "if you can't keep it in your pants, keep it in the family".. c'mon.. its not like its idiotic or borderline racist to make such jokes about white southerners or anything... its not like its just another stereotype that should be destroyed) and should be ignored by voters and the media.. no matter what they have said about sexuality before or what they have supported as far as putting government in control of sex.

But thanks for the poop jokes. After all.. where else could we possibly get those in this day and age??? Oh yeah.. everywhere.

Every time a politician says, "Stop gays!" on his campaign literature, he's pressing euphemisms to make his racial position clear -- and no one needs a cheat sheet.

Sorry, the logic does not flow. Yes, these jackasses are racist bigots. They are also religious bigots and homophobic. Just because they coexist, does not mean the religious and homophobic bigotry flows from the racism. They are separate entities. Perhaps the tie is that those who allow themselves to be hateful find lots of targets for their hatred, note also their constant attacks on children as criminals and turn juveniles into adult criminals and their taking money from education and children's recreation. Their support base sees all bigotry as one of course, but each is a separate entity. Oh yes, add mysogeny ot the list of their failings.

These are just more examples of the "do as I say, not as I do" variety. The trouble-some and ironic aspect of this all is that what these people say is infinitely more bizarre than what they do (or, more properly, what they sometimes are caught doing). What's more in-furiating is that Mr Vitter and his spouse will continue to live in "the style they are accustomed to" as will the many "cultural warriors" of the Right. The religion of capitalism is bankrupt and corroded; it's high time to confront it and call it to account - for what it says AND what it does.
