Huffington Post. Posted March 10, 2008.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has admitted to being involved with a prostitution ring; reports are that he will be indicted.

The video to the right is of Spitzer's statement to the public.

"Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation," the New York Times reports in a blockbuster revelation. Additionally, Fox News reports that Spitzer will resign.

More from the NYT:

The wiretap recording, made during an investigation of a prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP, captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9.

The governor learned that he had been implicated in the prostitution probe when a federal official contacted his staff last Friday, according to the person briefed on the case.

The governor informed his top aides Sunday night and this morning of his involvement. He canceled his public events today and scheduled an announcement for this afternoon after inquiries from the Times.

The governor's aides appeared shaken, and one of them began to weep as they waited for him to make his statement at his Manhattan office. Mr. Spitzer was seen leaving his Fifth Avenue apartment just before 3 p.m. with his wife of 21 years, Silda, heading to the news conference.

The man described as Client 9 in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, Emperors Club VIP, on the night of Feb. 13. Mr. Spitzer traveled to Washington that evening, according to a person told of his travel arrangements.

The affidavit says that Client 9 met with the woman in hotel room 871 but does not identify the hotel. Mr. Spitzer stayed at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on Feb. 13, according to a source who was told of his travel arrangements. Room 871 at the Mayflower Hotel that evening was registered under the another name.

UPDATE: Fox News reports based on two sources, "including one involved in the investigation itself," that Spitzer "has been indicted regarding acts committed in the District of Columbia." Also, New York's WNBC is reporting that federal investigators may have text messages from Spitzer arranging a meeting with the Emperor's Club.

The Times reported last week that federal authorities had arrested four people on charges of running an online prostitution ring "that serviced clients in New York, Paris and other cities and took in more than $1 million in profits over four years." [Read all about the Emperor's Club.]
The ring, known as the Emperor's Club V.I.P., had 50 prostitutes available for appointments in New York, Washington, Miami, London and Paris, according to a complaint unsealed on Thursday in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The appointments, made by telephone or through an online booking service, cost $1,000 to $5,500 an hour and could be paid for with cash, credit card, wire transfers or money orders, the complaint said.

According to the office of the United States attorney in Manhattan, Mark Brener, 62, of New Jersey, was the leader of the ring, but delegated day-to-day business responsibilities to Cecil Suwal, 23, also of New Jersey. The office said that Ms. Suwal controlled the bank accounts, took applications from prospective prostitutes and oversaw two booking agents, identified by the authorities as Temeka Rachelle Lewis, 32, of Brooklyn, and Tanya Hollander, 36, of Rhinebeck, N.Y. …

The ring's Web site showed pictures of the prostitutes, cropped so faces were not visible, and listed names like Sienna and Christine. The Web site, which was disabled shortly after the arrests were announced, ranked the prostitutes on a scale of one to seven "diamonds." A three-diamond woman, for example, could command a fee of $1,000 per hour. A seven-diamond woman cost more than $3,000 an hour.

For its most valued clients, the Emperor's Club offered membership in the elite "Icon Club," with hourly fees starting at $5,500, according to the federal complaint. The club also offered clients the opportunity to purchase direct access to a prostitute without having to contact the agency.

had a wife and still had to go out and pay for it.

You "Americans" LoL should make the desire for a man to have sex illegal.

Oh well, at least you can still take his children away and give them to a fireman of something like that.

p.s. don't forget to ruin his ability to produce an income.

That'll teach teach him not to be getting anymore hard ons.

Lool!!!

If God were really thinking outside the box, a man's penis would be detachable.

Think of the trouble we could avoid. For example,

Husband: "Honey, I'm going down to the waterhole to have a couple of beers with Frank and the boys. I'll return in two or three hours. Love ya."

Wife: "OK, but leave the penis with me. You won't need it where you're going."

New York Governor Spitzer is innocent because E.A. Blayre III is Client #9. Seriously though, all politicians are prostitutes. It is natural for them to be drawn to their own kind. Party makes no difference. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, warrant-less wiretapping and the Patriot Act. Never forget, they are all prostitutes.

Nothing significant happens in U. S. politics by accident

I think many on here would agree that just about all high office holders in this country are beholden to some group of patrons, other than "We the People". When they get out of line, their "handlers" take them down with something they have on them. Sometimes they go quietly, sometimes they don't - like Larry Craig (and the ones who won't play ball have "accidents" like Paul Wellstone). The real question to ask is, who was in charge of Spitzer, and what did he do to piss them off so badly?

In any event, it's obvious that his hormones overruled his common sense, since he had been a Federal prosecutor, and should have known better - if this is in-fact totally what it's being presented as. Given all that has happened in the past seven or so years, can we really take anything we are told at face value?

An honest politician would

An honest politician would say that of course he went to a prostitute, and more than once, did drugs, was gay and proud of it, got a little kinky once in a while, or just enjoyed life as a human being. Here in this religion obsessed nation we will not admit that we are humans but, instead, persist in the ignorant belief we are some form of supernatural being, not one of many evolved and evolving lifeforms inhabiting one small planet in a minor part of a great and yet to be explored universe.
In my long life I have snorted coke supplied by a former US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, same with a future mayor of Chicago, smoked pot and eaten shrooms with loads of present, future, or former judges, prosecutors and politicians along with just ordinary folks living ordinary lives.
It is time to lose our Puritanical past and get over our sense of superiority. We are mortal, sexual, drug using, life enjoying humans, period.
Get real.

Just curious as to why these high placed politicos--from state govs to the former pres of the U.S. (Clinton) have to get women (and in some cases, boys) for themselves? I mean, is there something about politics that makes these men extra horny? Are the wives to busy on the fund-raising circuit to put-out for their man? Or do these politician guys have "special tastes" that their significant other won't satisfy?

Just curious, because it seems like here in the U.S. our politicians have some of the most active libidos of any men I've known. Sure don't seem to see this sort of things in the average working-class Joe.

Consensual crime laws like prostitution laws are antithetical to true freedom.

We should all be able to do whatever we want with our own bodies and property as long as we don't physically harm another person's body or property without their consent.

Spitzer's only crime is not fighting to outlaw consensual crime laws.

If he had any stones he wouldn't resign but his lack of stones is why he never fought to outlaw those bullshit laws in the first place.

Democratic cave-ins to warrantless wiretapping are beginning to catch up with them. Serves them right.

Spitzer made a mistake, but he has shown far more integrity and class than Bill Clinton, David Vitter, Larry Craig and the others. He frankly acknowledged wrongdoing and apologized. He has committed, at most, a misdemeanor. He is the governor, not the Pope. I don't think he should resign. We Americans tend to be so puritanical on sexual issues and so complacent about serious crimes. We turn a blind eye to Bush et al., with their record of war crimes and violations of constitutional and basic human rights, and call for action against a guy who has private, consensual sex with a willing sex worker. Let's get our priorities--er--straight.

Why is prostitution illegal anyway? In most of Western Europe, brothel's are taxed and licensed by the state. Besides, I've been told a lot of guys "get off" with porno sex on the internet. At least Spitzer didn't do it that way, but used another human being who got paid a lot of money. My point, nobody is prosecuting guys who use internet sex to get off, and women are paid a lot for being models for doing that. But, one has actual sex with a guy and they and the guy get burned. It doesn't make any sense. Besides, if this were another rich John he would never be prosecuted. He is just being prosecuted now because he is high profile and some hot-shot government prosectuor gets to make his or her career. A lot of BS.

I agree. Why is it the press calls for impeachment and resignation for Clinton's blow jobs and Spitzer's paid sex, but yet won't peep the word impeachment when Bush orders ILLEGAL TORTURE, shreds our Constitution with an illegal mass wiretapping program, takes the country to war on a lie and previously debunked false intelligence, and drowns 2,000 people in New Orleans because of criminal negligence? And yet there is NO MENTION of resignation in the press! No scandal!

And Spitzer had paid sex. If his wife wants a divorce, that's justified. But, resignation is uncalled for. And sex work should be legal. Don't manual laborers sell their bodies? And high-tech laborers sell their minds? What's the big deal?

And, yeah, didn't Cheney shoot and kill someone? Did ANYONE call for his resignation after that?

So he hired a prostitute. Big fat, hairy deal. Yes, it's illegal, but it's a victimless crime, especially in the type of high-class operation he patronized.

Consensual sex between two consenting adults. What a crime! (heavy sarcasm). I would think that law enforcement officials have better things to busy themselves with that would actually protect the public, rather that playing voyeur and worrying about who is stepping off the monogamy bandwagon.

This is nothing to resign over. His wife may choose to "resign" from their marriage, but that's a private matter between the two of them and nothing for the public to concern itself about.

I can only add that I hope he got his money's worth with these hookers.

Get involved in sexual misconduct that they KNOW will ruin everything in their non-sexual lives?

I just don't get it. Sure, there are women that screw up, the recent spate of teachers and all but the majority of people absolutely ruining their lives are men who engage in what they know are illegal liasons yet they go for it anyway.

I am reminded of so many FBI stings involving adult ment soliciting who they think are young boys onling, agreeing to hook up and getting slammed for life.

Is sex that important that you have no control over yourownselves?

Let me see, Clinton's folly was Ken Starr's fault and now "Mr. Clean's" problems rest with the almighty. So long, Spitz. Thanks for helping, in the end, to put it in perspective for a nation of suckers.

A legacy dishonored, will be better remembered.

All are Democrats that at one time seemed to possess enormous potential in national politics with the White House not out of reach. All three ruined their potential with sex scandals that took them down. Add Clinton to the list to complete the Four Horsemen of the "Woody" club. All four had much to offer those of us that revere progressive governance but their respective brain waves were corrupted by their adolescent libido and promise gave way to lust. Cheney and Bush must be doubled over in laughter pain while the rest of us hear of McCain's daliance(s), Obama's soon to be shouted womanizing and Hillary's defense of the 3 AM phone call. We're running a whore house folks and that's more important than crimes against humanity, deficits, recession, human suffering and despair. Will we ever progress to a collective lucid interval? Not likely, there are simply too many morons afoot and before we are done we will rejoice in becoming Americhung Province in the vast Communist empire known as China. At that point, whether your zipper is up, down or at half-mast won't mean a thing and neither will any upwardly-mobile Democrat.

I'm sure Mr. Spitzer has done much evil to many people for minor transgressions. He probably deserves this humiliation and ruination.

May he rot in MSM hell.

Washington DC has a history of exclusive call girl services run by mafias and intelligence agencies, both US and foreign. These have been used (especially in the Hoover FBI era) to entrap politicians and blackmail or dicredit them.
Add to this the fact that everyone in the country is under 24 hour surveillance (and really since the 1st Bush administration-this isnt new- look up "Carnivore" - a programme for computer programs to data mine all telephony worldwide) and I can't help but wonder...
Still, Elliot showed no self control, which is the first prerequisite of being a crusader against corruption.
I hope she was good....

is the look on his wife's face - that says it all.
I can only imagine what his three daughters are going through. Victimless crime? Not so. Not when you get caught anyway.

All eyes are on Spitzer, because we have a SEX Scandal. So NOW is the time to be looking around to see what else is going on, what else is about to be slipped by the American people.
And LOOK, congress is about to soften it's stance on FISA IMMUNITY!
So once again the Democrats seem to be wearing down and giving ground to the Bush administrations push to give the telecom companies immunity. No, no, no. These telecom monopolies have a broken the laws of our Constitution, for profit from our government. This cannot be allowed to happen, the crimes MUST be fully investigated, and the top government officials that sanctioned this, before 9-11 and after, must be exposed and then prosecuted. To let them get away with this undermines the very fabric of our Constitution.
I draw a weekly political comic strip that very few people see, where I deal with this and outer under reported topics, FISA Immunity is my latest, it's up on my website now.

The Mann Act

It's a hundred-year-old piece of crap, and they only use it against people they don't like-- Charlie Chaplin and Charles Manson were two. It's also like convicting Al Capone for tax evasion--a way to trump up some charges when you can't nail somebody when you want to. Very few people are convicted under the Mann Act.

The guy hired a whore. He used his own money. The consequences are personal--to his credibility, his marriage, his relationships with his kids, etc.

They should cut the crap with the Mann Act.

Can't help but wonder how much support Spitzer would be getting if her name was Divine Brown. Can't help but wonder how much empathy the prostitute would be getting if her name was Divine Brown. Can't help but wonder how many opportunities to turn this mess into income this girl would have, if her name was Divine Brown.
