ACORN: The Most Cost-Effective Investment the Government (and Foundations) Have Ever Made

The real purpose of the right's attacks on ACORN is to destroy a remarkably successful 50-year-old grassroots model for defending the poor and workers.

To understand the current attacks on ACORN, and the organization itself, we need to go back more than 60 years, to the 1930s and the New Deal, when for the first time, the federal government accepted responsibility for directly helping the non-working poor.

These programs were expanded in the 1940s, but in the 1950s, a backlash erupted against the poor, driven by several factors.

The postwar prosperity dramatically reduced the number of poor families, and an increasing number of black women were added to the welfare rolls, injecting race into the debate.

Meanwhile, a Republican White House mostly left welfare matters to the states.

The myth of welfare recipients as lazy, immoral chiselers began to circulate. States adopted punitive laws to reduce welfare rolls. Special units of welfare departments conducted "midnight raids" to see if the recipients were involved in a relationship with a man, something that would result in a cut-off of benefits. The average grant declined.

In desperation, low-income mothers in dozens of big cities organized for survival. They came together to collectively negotiate not only with welfare offices for benefits, but with utilities to eliminate deposits required from low-income households and with the post office to install locks on mailboxes in apartment houses to prevent the theft of welfare checks.

Several veterans of the civil rights movement worked to bring local welfare-rights organizations together into a national organization.

In June 1966, a coordinated national day of action brought tens of thousands of people into the streets in 16 major cities. Two months later, representatives of 75 local welfare-rights organizations convened in Chicago to create the National Welfare Rights Organization.

Led by George Wiley, a Ph.D. chemist and leader of the Congress of Racial Equality, NWRO was an unusual organization. It was a federation of local groups that coordinated local and national actions. Black women comprised a majority of its leadership.

NWRO's successes led to rapid growth. By 1969, it boasted over 500 chapters with 22,500 dues-paying families.

In the late 1960s, a growing number of people looked to create a broad-based anti-poverty movement, an idea embraced by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in his Poor People's Campaign, in which NWRO played an important role.

In 1972, when Wiley left NWRO, he told the New York Times, "The welfare-rights movement created a political and economic crisis around the issue of welfare which could have led to reform or repression. What we are witnessing is repression, and we need a broad, organized movement to counter it."

Wiley wanted to use the NWRO model to build a coalition of the working poor, unemployed, seniors and the lower middle class around issues such as national health insurance, consumer rights, housing and tax reform.

After a tragic accident took Wiley's life in 1973, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, created by two former NWRO organizers Wiley had sent to Little Rock, Ark., in 1970, became the primary vehicle for implementing his vision.

Led by Wade Rathke, ACORN had affiliates in 20 cities by 1980. Today, it has about 400,000 low- and moderate-income members in more than 100 cities in 40 states.

ACORN is one of the few grassroots neighborhood organizations capable of wielding power on a national scale.

It is unique in the combination of strategies it uses: organizing, direct action, lawsuits, lobbying and the provision of direct services.

That ACORN is a federation of self-governing locals with a national board comprised largely of poor people seems to both amaze and gall the right.

Early this year, the conservative blog, Provocateur said about ACORN's board members, "They rose through the ranks of ACORN, often starting as foot soldiers fighting for causes near and dear to them. Since ACORN is often associated with causes for poor, most of the board are themselves poor. As such, they are often rather unsophisticated, and thus will be overwhelmed by the sophisticated nature of the organization itself."

ACORN has been a target of the right virtually since its founding. During the l980s and early 1990s, President George H.W. Bush's Department of Labor convened a grand jury to investigate ACORN's relationship to the progressive labor union SEIU.

The investigation was dropped after Bill Clinton took office. The President George W. Bush's Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was forced to quit in part because he fired several U.S. attorneys who refused to go after ACORN's voter-registration efforts when they found no evidence of alleged voter fraud.

ACORN's bottom-up and coordinated structure has enabled it to confront national corporations in a way few other organizations can.

When Reagan and the first President Bush's regulators failed to enforce the Community Reinvestment Act, ACORN and other groups conducted their own studies.

They identified banks with patterns of discriminatory lending, exposed these practices to the media and then demanded regulators do their jobs. The combination of publicity and confrontations led many lenders to agree to make loans to borrowers who could afford them.

Surely its slightly far fetched to called it the greatest investments the US has ever made? perhaps the Abolition of Slavery and ending the essentially apartheid system held?

A rogue's gallery of right-wing attack dogs

One has only to note that the people behind the attacks on ACORN are a rogue's gallery of right-wing attack dogs.

Not to insult attack dogs.

I regret to say most of the PUMAs are repeating the attacks against ACORN. So you should stay away from the PUMAs.

As you may or may not recall, the PUMAs were Democrats who saw through Obama from the get-go. PUMA stood for "party unity my ass." These folks were definitely ahead of their time,. and they tried to warn us about Obama.

Then, wouldn't you know, many of the PUMAs started attacking ACORN and repeating other Fox News crap about Obama. They began using the same ad hominem techniques used by the Obama boosters, and I stopped supporting them immediately.

I don't care if you think Obama is a god or the Devil or what. Once you start repeating right-wing talking points against a Democrat, you have f*cked up bigtime.

The logic seems to be, "I hate Candidate X on a visceral, personal. I will therefore believe and repeat anything an deverything bad I hear about Candidate X, no matter what the source. To hell with fair play."

This is the worst sort of politics, and a good reason to ignore most of the PUMAs.

I hasten to say the big progressive blogs like Huffington Post, Buzzflash, and Democratic Underground also went bad in their ad hominem campaign against Hillary and her supporters. So you should ignore them, too.

I'm sure there are good Democrats somewhere. But they do not include Obama supporters, PUMAs, nor most of the progressive blogs. They have all gone bad.

PS: This is why I'm so Sad About the Young.

ACORN Fell
Posted by: lsmart on Sep 23, 2009 5:03 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
ACORN fell because the organization hasn't been "helping the poor".

They pushed for low-cost housing loans. Now the poor are losing their homes.

They were entangled in voter fraud. How is this helping the poor?

They assist those who exploit under-aged prostitutes. How is this helping the poor?

ACORN "says" it helps the poor, just like Crest "says" their product makes your teeth healthy (it's packed with fluoride, which rots teeth).

Saying and actually doing are two entirely different things.

Consumer Beware.

Time to investigate the W White House

Some of Acorn's many volunteers and employees screwed up. That has been taken as an excuse to defund the organization and investigate its leadership.

Fine. Now is the time to investigate the Bush Administration for its criminal behavior over the eight years of a deeply corrupt presidency.

No more excuses. Appoint a committee, appoint a special prosecutor, start the process now.

This one company defrauds the government out of more funds each year than the entire federal budget for ACORN, and they pay no penalty for it. Each dollar spent on ACORN contributes far more economic activity than a dollar spent on TARP; poor people spend what they have instead of investing it in bets on speculations on derivatives of debts, or whatever the Wall Street casinos want to call them today.

You realize that pursuing President Bush in some kind of court case would bring a Republican renaissance and GOP control of one of not both houses in Congress, don't you?

The left-most 15-20% would hang on with what the media would label the full-time haters of the left, but you would lose ALL the moderates. If that's okay with you, go for it. I've known people for whom the pound of flesh is enough.

As far as Acorn goes, if you remembered the violence and damage the SDS guys like Acorn's founder caused, you'd shy away from them.

Of course, some of you guys will love an organization with a lily-white upper echelon and a "diverse" storefront working class.

the same Democrat Party they endorsed in 2008 (I am told that they endorsed Obama according to Wiki) and the same Republican Party that pretended to be "nice" to them. Better to bailout AIG than it is to give a small amount of funding to ACORN who actually has the hearts and brains to get the povertized back on their feet, isn't it? The public resignation and addiction to getting too politically motivated makes it hard for ACORN to make it in this bloody dog-eat-dog hell.

The seeds of Acorn go deep into the Democratic party. It is not just the prostitution tapes.
They have voter fraud charges, tax leins and receive large sums of MY money. I don't support them! Once the investigations start, we shall see how the talking points change.
I was quite surprised Obama did not know the TARP fund included 8.5 billion for Acorn. Guess he didn't read the bill either!

because of the attacks on ACORN and Congressional caving-in based on those attacks.
Living in a rural area of VA, I haven't been able to have rational discussions about this issue due to the fact very few people know of ACORN. This article was welcome --- I've forwarded it on to back up what I've already told my friends.

I am discouraged beyond belief at the easy dismissal of Van Jones and the quick cut-off of funding for ACORN. When single-payer was kept off the table in health care reform discussions, I knew we were just beginning to see a widespread dismissal of any progressive voices and a total disregard for anyone living in poverty in the US. In a country with only two political parties, I don't see a remedy in sight. There are about 80 or so honest, compassionate, law-abiding Representatives and maybe five Senators who fit that category. Otherwise, no matter how the political talk is framed, it currently works for one goal: protecting profit. We can talk ourselves silly on alternative media sites, but unless we start working on alternative political parties, what is the use?

ACORN serves all
Posted by: shoosta on Sep 23, 2009 10:25 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The ACORN staff, shown on the "undercover" tape, were doing what the ACORN mission proclaims which is to serve everyone who needs assistance. These undercover creeps came in off the street demanding assistance. I also work for a service agency that refuses no-one. The tape caught the staff brainstorming about the best way to assist these people. Even those involved in illegal activities are required by the IRS to report income. ACORN was upholding federal law by assisting these people claiming to be involved in prostitution. Even regarding the claims of the undercover operatives to bring in underage illegal immigrants, the staff counseled them about fair treatment and advised them to promote hygiene. Perhaps it would have been prudent to contact a child protective agency. But service agencies like ACORN deal with a lot of people every day and many of those people make all kinds of claims that have no basis in reality. Just because some bozo claims to be involved in international smuggling does not make it true, particularly since he comes to a low-income service agency to complete his taxes and to ask advice about his "international enterprises". The staff probably thought that these people were your typical crazies that wanted to act important and exaggerate their standing in the world. It is sad that those staff were terminated because of this Rovian operation. It was obvious to me that the staff were working to solve a problem that was dropped onto them in the best way that they could. The problem with ACORN right now is that they should have stood by their people.

I've been an ACTUAL MEMBER of ACORN for years.
Posted by: Quannah on Sep 23, 2009 10:25 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
And one thing that isn't talked about much when ACORN is discussed is the fact that it is a member-driven organization. There are staff, but sometimes only one or two staff people in a small office with several hundred MEMBERS.

We members pay membership dues. $10/month. Not much, I'd say. But these dues are paid by people who don't have a lot of disposable income. They may or may not have a job. They are living on the edge, facing possible eviction because they can't afford mortgage payments or rent. They're facing having utilities shut off for nonpayment. They have no medical care. They have no money for new clothing for their kids for school. They live on the edge.

Yet we pay our dues. Why? Because through ACORN, we have learned that we can make a positive difference in our own communities. And we do that by "actions." Attending city hall meetings and speaking. Marching on city hall with home made signs in order to get street lights on streets that have never had them. We spend countless hours getting signatures on petitions to help get police to start patrolling our neighborhoods. We have meetings in our homes. We talk about what needs improvement in our communities, and we VOTE on what to make a priority.

We have, because of our actions, forced a corrupt mayor from office after it came to light that he was receiving kickbacks in order to allow an industrial plant to dump their toxic waste into the river. WE did that.

We got streetlights on the greenbelt where over a dozen women had been attacked, some raped, and bicycle patrols along the greenbelt to allow everyone to use that public space safely.

We got a four-way stop sign at an intersection where a young girl was struck by a car on her way to school and almost died. She had been the fourth child hit by a car in that intersection. Now there's a four-way stop sign and a crossing guard to help the kids get to and from school safely.

Membership dues and donations are the life-blood of ACORN, not federal tax dollars. That's a big lie. We are self-funded. And even though ACORN members are often the hardest hit in these economic times, we continue to dig into our own pockets, scrape together our nickels and dimes, and we pay our dues because ACORN makes a real difference in people's lives. We make a real difference in our neighborhoods.

ACORN IS its' members. We work hard. We do good work because we care about our communities and we care about social justice. We do this work because without us, no one else would do it.

Please support ACORN in your communities. We are hurting from these right-wing smears. We are good people who are working to make a difference. Don't believe the LIES. Look up your local ACORN office and give a donation if you can, join if you can, help them, and help your own communities.

Don't believe the lies and misinformation that the wing-nuts are putting out there. Their agenda is to crush ACORN and disempower low-to-moderate income people in their own communities. If people have the power to change things, those in power are threatened. Think about that.

no tax money should go to Acorn

I have no problem with ACORN other than it's corruption, but in order for it to maintain its tax-exempt status, various arms of ACORN purport to be a non-partisan. Well that is clearly a lie, and therefore; they deserve no tax money. How can you defend it's leader stealing 1 million $'s from the organization as well. That wasn't mentioned in the article. ACORN can exist and help the poor, but not on my dollar. There are better and less corrupt ways to help the poor, than to keep them in that cycle of poverty which seems to be the agenda of ACORN and other groups that teach the poor to trick the system to their advantage no matter the results. How many people did they put in houses they could not afford and were later foreclosed on?

to donate to ACORN. Read the previous post from a member of ACORN. Visit their site at ACORN.org. Even if you don't have an office in your neighborhood or city, you can donate to the general fund. Right now our donations will be matched by a generous contributor who will match donations up to $20,000. Would be wonderful to find a few more generous contributors to continue the matching.

A personal plea to all those people who sent Joe Wilson's opponent a contribution before you even found out who or what he was: match that donation to ACORN.

The funniest & saddest story.

The funny part - Obama throws ACORN under the bus - pretty crowded under there now and a media didn't even know ACORN had problems or was so corrupt and Obama didn't know ACORN was receiving that level of funding?

You have to love politicians - lying is so easy for them and they do it with a smile!

The real tragedy are the people ACORN was supposed to help. The poor and disenfranchised are left holding the bag - as ACORN top executives squandered millions, played politics and brought their possible collapse upon themselves!

50 years ago it was a great idea. But fast forward 50 years. Millions stolen, a company gone completely out of control due to poor management, hiring substandard employees (non profit doesn't mean you have to hire every idiot that walks through the door).

The beauty of our capitalist system in America is there are a multitude of companies that will pick up where ACORN left off and do a much better job. Capitalism, only the best run companies will survive! GOODBY ACORN

Someone will gladly take them over and return it to if glorious former self!

The problem with ACORN is not corruption but lack of broader populism.

ACORN stands for Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now but for all its talk on community organizing, I do not see them them located in rural America, the exurbs, or the suburbs where community organizing is seriously needed. Instead, most of their offices are located in the urban areas where there are bound to be ghetto neighborhoods not too far away. This makes it too vulnerable to racial stereotyping. ACORN needs to engage in broader economic populism and it needs to move into more heavily Republican territory such as the rural, exurban, and suburban areas if it is to be taken seriously. They are not denying that their politically biased which opens the door to questioning their 501c4 status.

Sex talk, partisanship and edited video in the U.S. of A.
Posted by: Habsberg on Sep 23, 2009 12:54 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I watched the youtube videos of New York, San Diego, San Bernardino and Baltimore. I felt the actors did Acorn a service in San Diego, San Bernardino and Baltimore. In the New York video, the entrapment was too sloppy, all I saw that was out of bounds was a suggestion to bury money in the back yard. The line I draw is with the child prostitution. The video cuts so that you can't see the NY response to the underage girls line. When giving tax advice, I would have Acorn get prostitutes to file as performance artists if that is the best category in the tax code. What do sexworkers in Rhode Island and Nevada file as? Millions of prostitutes will earn money in each of the 48 states where it is illegal, should tax advisers turn them away?

The overall review is that both the actors and the Acorn advisers are not acting very intelligently. It seems that about 18 Acorn offices did not make the mistake, not as bad as it could have been. If the videos were made in the best interest of the whole story, a video of the other cities that did not make the cut would be up with the guilty. There are a few points of note, like that in Baltimore Acorn advised performance artists to file as performance artists and the video suggests this is bad advice. In NYC the adviser says she would tell the actress not to be a prostitute but that she wouldn't listen.

I hope if this pair of video makers can hone their craft and shed the partisanship, maybe someday they can investigate the allegations of wife swapping and underage prostitution with Eric Prince and the Blackwater Xe crowd. My guess is that they are not interested in ridding this bad behavior where it can be found but rather in giving Acorn a tarnished image that it will take a bit of work to overcome. If the anti-Acorn legislation can be used to stop abusive military contractors, as the link to commondreams.org above suggests, then it may all be worth it. My guess is that the law will only be applied to Acorn and the biggest and baddest will continue to receive the full support of the U.S. taxpayers.

CONGRESSIONAL MORTAL SIN…SOCIAL SECURITY

SEPT 27, 2009…”Job Losses and Early Retirements Strain Social Security System
The deficits — $10 billion in 2010 and $9 billion in 2011 — they will add to the overall federal deficit.”
=====
If a voter ever needed a model to confirm their belief that congress cannot run a hot dog stand…Social Security is it. For decades the demo-socialists used the SS issue as a demon by claiming Repubs “wanted to take it away”…a convincing lie election after election.
Did I mention a Democrat moved our SS Fund into the General Fund where it was exposed easiy to theft?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch the congressional thieves were looting the SS Trust Fund of its reserves to buy votes with porky bills year after year after year. They left IOUs in place of trillions in cash. Thanks a pant load you shameless thugs! Once again congress creates a problem, fails to solve it, campaigns to solves it, does nothing…you know the drill.

Klinton got a couple years of a demo-socialist congress so he taxed it. It what dems do.
Bush tried to tour the country and get support for an OPTION so those under 55 could invest a tiny percent in private ways. The demo-socialists got their rent-a-mobs and demonized him with 80 year olds in wheechairs and such. The option was for below age 55…but when has truth ever mattered? Dems never want less gov-meant control over your life. Bush threw in the towel.

But fiscal insanity eventually catches up to congress in 2010 and will land right in your paycheck after about 40 years of trusting congress.
The word is Obama wants to tackle SS next year. That will be ugly. You will not like it. Its that “trust” thing.

Interesting comments by Perry Logan: All Or None, and None Wins

Really, Perry, you should know better. You go through a list of mishaps by various parties you (once) thought had some validity in the social debate that's underway, and cite each one for some mistake or other, saying that with one mistake by (fill in your agency here) they abdicated your support for their cause. You now avoid them all, and they can go to hell for all you care.

That, Perry, is a clear recipe for utter failure, of the causes you care about. Given that we are all human, and that none of us knows the future, it's inevitable that any and all organizations will sooner or later "fail" you. You'll be left with just what the Reich wants you to have: no one left to champion your causes, because in your book they have to test out PERFECT, in order to gain your support.

It would be nice if the world respected your preference for perfection, Perry, but it simply doesn't. I venture to say that, because you yourself are also human, you'd have a very hard time passing your own test.

Jayzer, Here Are The "Real Facts" You Requested On ACORN
Posted by: ChicagoWay on Oct 7, 2009 3:08 PM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The thief was ACORN founder Wade Rathke's brother, Dale Rathke, who was Chief Financial Officer of ACORN. His embezzlement was covered up by ACORN for many years - going back to at least 2004. A couple of honest ACORN board members demanded an audit to find out how much was stolen and they were fired for their troubles.

No one knows for sure how much was stolen because no outside independent audit was ever done, only an "internal review" by hired ACORN accountants and attorneys. However, the amount ACORN Pres Bertha Lewis admits to was just shy of $1 million ($948,000). The fired ACORN employees claim it was much more, possibly as much as $5 million.

Either way, Dale Rathke was NEVER prosecuted because ACORN never reported it to authorities. Dale Rathke only resigned AFTER the NYT broke the story in July 2008, although the theft was known for years. The theft was carried on ACORN books as a "loan to Citizen's Consulting Inc" (see below on who CCI REALLY is).

Once the embarrassing theft was ratted out by the fired workers and it became public the stolen money was repaid by Wade Rathke and Drummond Pike, the latter of whom is the CEO of the Tide's Foundation. Pike tried to cover up his donation through a group called Citizen's Consulting Inc., but has now admitted he personally was the “anonymous donor.” He claims he tried to cover it up because he wanted to keep Tide's name out of the scandal. Wade Rathke of course is also on the Tide's board (what a shock).

Tide's also has been a key financial contributor to ACORN and other progressive causes for many years. Drummond Pike has a issued a press release about his part in the scandal and it is posted at the Tide's web site, although he never mentions the phony CCI cover up (Tide's link below). He claims no Tide's foundation money was ever used - that he personally paid it as "a favor to a friend" (presumably referring to fellow board member Wade Rathke).

Wade Rathke himself was finally forced to resign (supposedly) from ACORN USA after all this finally became too much to cover up, but immediately took over ACORN International. ACORN International has now changed its name to 'Community Organizations International' and supposedly has no current affiliation with ACORN.

There may be fine volunteers and honest ACORN members, but their leadership has been proven to be as crooked as a barrel of snakes. Only the lowest of scum bags would steal money meant to help poor folks. In this case it was actually the top founders of ACORN, who obviously only use the poor to enrich and empower themselves.

A rogue's gallery of right-wing attack dogs
Posted by: Perry Logan on Sep 23, 2009 3:12 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

My guess is that the law will only be applied to Acorn and the biggest and baddest will continue to receive the full support of the U.S. taxpayers.
