Major Anti-Immigrant Figure Can't Pretend He's Not a Racist Anymore

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan is an unassuming place, more like a small-town library than a research institute. But hidden away in 17 cardboard boxes deep inside the simple facility are the papers of John Tanton, the retired Michigan opthamologist who has been the most important figure in the modern American anti-immigration movement for three decades. The papers, which include more than 20 years of letters from the founder of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and a batch of other nativist groups, contain explosive material about Tanton's beliefs. They also show that FAIR, where Tanton still serves as a member of the board, has been well aware of Tanton's views and activities for years.

Tanton has long claimed that he is no racist -- that, in fact, he came to his immigration restrictionism through progressive concerns for population control and the environment, not disdain for the foreign born. He characterizes himself as a "fair person," and on his website he condemns the "unsavory characters whose views can easily be characterized as anti-American, anti-Semitic and outright racist."

Fair enough. But what do Tanton's letters have to say?

As it turns out, quite a lot. Although Tanton has been linked to racist ideas in the past -- fretting about the "educability" of Latinos, warning of whites being out-bred by others, and publishing a number of white nationalist authors -- the papers in the Bentley Library show that Tanton has for decades been at the heart of the white nationalist scene. He has corresponded with Holocaust deniers, former Klan lawyers and the leading white nationalist thinkers of the era. He introduced key FAIR leaders to the president of the Pioneer Fund, a white supremacist group set up to encourage "race betterment," at a 1997 meeting at a private club. He wrote a major funder to encourage her to read the work of a radical anti-Semitic professor -- to "give you a new understanding of the Jewish outlook on life" -- and suggested that the entire FAIR board discuss the professor's theories on the Jews. He practically worshipped a principal architect of the Immigration Act of 1924 (instituting a national origin quota system and barring Asian immigration), a rabid anti-Semite whose pro-Nazi American Coalition of Patriotic Societies was indicted for sedition in 1942.

As early as 1969, Tanton showed a sharp interest in eugenics, the "science" of breeding a better human race that was utterly discredited by the Nazis, trying to find out if Michigan had laws allowing forced sterilization. His interest stemmed, he wrote in a letter of inquiry that year, from "a local pair of sisters who have nine illegitimate children between them." Some 30 years later, he was still worrying about "less intelligent" people being allowed children, saying that "modern medicine and social programs are eroding the human gene pool."

Throughout, FAIR -- which, along with Tanton, refused repeated requests for comment for this story -- has stood by its man. Its 2004 annual report praised him for "visionary qualities that have not waned one bit." Around the same time, Dan Stein, who has led FAIR since 1988 as executive director or president and who was copied on scores of Tanton's letters, insisted FAIR's founder had "never asserted the inferiority or superiority of any racial, ethnic, or religious group. Never."

Blood and Soil

In the world view of John Tanton, successful societies are not based on a mere sharing of territory, values and political systems. Nations and their cultures, he has suggested on numerous occasions, are largely determined by biology -- race.

In a Nov. 13, 1994, letter to white nationalist columnist Lawrence Auster, a regular correspondent, Tanton suggested that the Declaration of Independence was actually a document based on the "bond of blood and ethnicity -- nationhood." Almost a year earlier, in a Dec. 10, 1993, letter to Garrett Hardin, a controversial ecology professor, he said: "I've come to the point of view that for European-American society and culture to persist requires a European-American majority, and a clear one at that." On Jan. 26, 1996, he wrote Roy Beck, head of the immigration restrictionist group NumbersUSA (and then an employee of Tanton's foundation U.S. Inc.), questioning whether Latinos were capable of governing California.

.....so sad, when inbreeding goes awry. It's not mentioned in the article (page 1, paragraph 5) who the males were that were responsible for the 9 children, but according to the current breed of Republicans, they would be encouraged to have more of the same.

From the depths of my heart, Jeronimus, I hope these weren't your relatives. (But if they were, I totally support your right to live even if I disagree vehemently with your comments)
With love, and another vote for democracy,

". With all these multicultural identities of color demanding their rights ands preening about their wonderfulness, it's certainly high time for White identity to re-assert itself.

We, White people, have a right to be us, and only we can be us.

Let me remind you that racial posturing is not universal. In fact, most people I know from different races and blends do NOT "demand" any special rights nor do they "preen...about their wonderfulness." However, you clearly belong to that small minority of preeners that you criticize. Perhaps you should do something about your own xenophobic racial hatred, before attacking others.

I'm perfectly happy to allow people like you your opinions based on false ideology, false statistics, and false science. Freedom of speech does not shy away from the ignorant, but I'll never understand for the life of me why you get so upset when other people call you out on what you are: RACIST.

You see, those of us who've evolved from a closeted world view recognize that there is no such thing as a white race. Obviously there's no such thing as a latino race. Science proved over a hundred years ago that there is only one race of people on this planet. It's people like you, all hung up on borders and skin tone that keep these backward ideas floating around.

I challenge you to get your DNA tested. You may be suprised to find that you have a recent non-white ancestor. You may want to get that checked before claiming you are 100% white.

Also, you may be from an ethnic background that only recently received "White" status. If you are Irish, Italian, Slavic, Eastern European, or any non-Anglo-Saxon Protestant ethnic mix, your great-grandparents were seen as dangerous to the political and cultural foundations of the US. With their Catholisism, poverty, strange languages and large families, these groups were feared by the "White" community.

White people (I am one) are historically the problem. It's easy for you to cry foul for the white people, because this is the first time in our US History that caucasians have had something to worry about. Good I say. Majority status is over Honkey, get used to it. We have no idea what it must have been like to be non-white in eras of lynching and slavery and too many injustices to count. "it's certainly high time for White identity to re-assert itself"......you sound like such a bigot here. Pride of culture is one thing, igniting a race war is another. Dude, you are scary as hell and I think your thinly veiled racist remarks should be relegated to the dustbin of history.

RACISTS....
What is Your Nationality???
When did your ancestors come to this country..WHY?
How were they Treated when they Arrived?
Who discriminated against them? Who helped them Up?
This 'immigration' BS has been going on ever since man learned to travel. It was not to control Our country.."Give US your Tired Your Poor, your huddle masses Yearning to be free"- All you so called "Patriots" look at the inscription on the Statue of Liberty...I'll Wait....
Okay so don't you OWE Your ancestors the Honor of NOT BEING One of Those WHO Kept Your Kin Down? Is it not your sacred Duty as an American to not only Honor our founding Fathers Ideals, but the hopes and dreams of our ancestors who arrived here with a suitcase(bag) and a shilling/Rubel...Pittance in their Pockets????
Until this conversation turns to WHAT causes this perpetual Propagnda, No One Will Be Free!
It is NOT the Mexicans, or the Pacific Islanders, or the Asians..the cause of our hardship lies in the Business practices of Multinational Conglomerates- who are working very hard to drive down the cost of Human labor- to increase their Profit margins!Go after those who use immigrants as a Threat/Bargining Chip against US workers- using immigrants to drive down or stagnate wages, rape benefit packages and flood the market creating stiffer competition, Lower Expectations and demands by workers.
If we demanded they treat these immigrant (esp illegal immigrants) with the same Worker Rights and Employer obligations as US this Unbalancing of the Commodity known as Human labor would cease.
If you make companies pay these Workers at the same standard as US_ They will stop hiring them (will get more bang from for their Buck from an Educated, ambitious, needing References Native). The Human rights violation committed by these Corps (Esp Big Ag Business) are not just a Black eye to our Credo's, but a kick in the Teeth to our Workers.
Consider you get a pittance of a wage which does not keep up with the cost of living (Check comes from a Corp). You go home and Write checks to cover essentials to a Corp, What is left over you spend on a Corp Product, and if you can't quite afford it now you can get a Loan from a Corp- with an interest rate higher than your saving account yeilds monthly.
SO WHO EXACTLY IS SCREWING THE AMERICAN WORKER??? NOT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, BUT INCS.
this is why Mr. Keating 5, 'the Deregulator; can't figure out which script he's on during speeches, or while voting in the Senate. He didn't Even support his own Immigration Bill when it came Up! Profiteers and their Puppets in Gov't LOVE the influx of cheap Undocumented and easily abused immigrants, it keeps the Natives Under control, Humble and desperate

What really matters about immigration
Posted by: Growthbuster on Sep 23, 2008 7:23 AM

I hate to see so much energy wasted trying to parse the motives of those advocating what amounts to sustainable immigration policy.

It should be clear to us an economy that must create millions of new jobs year over year will also liquidate our natural resources.

It should be clear that we are exploiting illegal immigrants, separating families, and retarding the development of their home nations so we can have cheap food, cheap houses and cheaply manicured lawns.

If we, as progressives, have true compassion for all the people of the planet, we'll look at the big picture of what is best for those families and those nations over the long haul, and what is best for future generations of all nations.

Think about it. The current system is not the answer.

I have to say, this article is a do-nothing rant. It accomplishes nothing and offers nothing. Heidi Beirich seems to have a cob up her ass about racism, or maybe it's just a fetish she enjoys. All she writes is, racism this and racism that. Anyone she has ideological differences with? Oh, you must be a racist!

Does racism and bigotry exist? Of course, it does, but nothing like it did decades ago. Sure, we have more progress to make, but we have come along way. Unfortunately, people like Heidi exist, to misinterpret events, stir up hatred, and just outright lie. She contributes nothing towards building a bridge between ethnic groups. In fact, she is a hinderance.

We need solutions, not hate-mongering. The fact is, immigration is an issue that needs to be addressed, not ignored by calls of racism. John Tanton is not a major figure, and is not representative of the majority of Americans who want immigration reform. Wanting immigration reform does not automatically equate to banning immigration or hating immigrants. I personally, think the path to immigration needs to be made simpler.

Instead of making immigrants wait years and file tons of paperwork, shorten the paperwork, process their applications quickly, do basic background checks and let them become citizens within a year. If they don't want to become citizens, why not have a migrant worker program allowing for short-term residency. Then enforce their return. Simple yes, but still reform, and a potential resolution.

You see, Heidi Beirich doesn't give a rat's ass about solutions. Her existance derives from stirring up hatred and expressing lies. She's a self-seeking, attention-grabbing bitch. Alternet should be embarrassed by her presence.

I hate the be the bearer of bad news, but this is the mess white supremacy has created. Like everything based upon this false premise, it offers simple solutions for simple minded. This is exactly the same mindset that dominated Nazi Germany in the 30's and 40's. Blame those "illegals" for all the problems we're having in this country. Not the government, who continues to destroy the middle class. Blame Pedro and Pablita who clean the bathrooms at Wal-Mart for minimum wage. Make the corrupt government of Mexico responsible for the welfare of its citizens instead of beholden to violent drug cartels? Keep our government out of the assassination of lawfully elected leaders we don't like business? Nah, too difficult. Much easier to claim that "brown people" are outbreeding whites and will soon "enslave" white people.

(LOL--not a bad idea really--especially if I can have Brad Pitt as my houseboy. I think he'd look very nice in a starched white apron and nothing else).

The entire article and the quoted letters prove this point beyond a shadow of a doubt. FAIR (which is anything BUT) is willing to dabble in failed pseudo-science and feel-good nationalism. Until those who want to see REAL immigration reform come to pass separate themselves from the bigot contingent, nothing will change. The bratty children are running rampant and the adults are being drowned out.

I've found that those espousing this man's theories about racial separation and immigration, forget their own history! The fact is their parents came to this country from somewhere else! The only "Native Americans" are mostly located on the Reservations that have been set up! The truth about this intolerance and hate they continue to spew is not just because of ignorance!

The trade policies that the US has engaged in, in the last 15 years or so have driven wages down in those countries as well as our own. The people that have come in illegally are picking the fruit, cleaning the houses and offices, working in fast food restaurants, and construction, in many cases may not get paid or are paid less than citizens! You want to go after people, how about fairer and saner international trade policies, how about the people that hire these people because they profit from the labor, how about acknowledging that while you were born in this country - you too are an immigrant!?!

I oppose illegal immigration, based on MY thinking, not his.

We need immigration reform, to do two things:

1. Seal the border.
2. Speed up the LEGAL immigration process, because we need MORE legal immigrants (they are what made this country great in the first place)

Most Americans do not want the country swamped by illegal migrant workers. These people commit more crimes than either native-born Americans or properly screened, legal immigrants, they swamp hospitals and other social services, and they bring down wages.

You don't have to be a racist to object to this, you just need a healthy sense of self-preservation. This article is no different than the smears on right-wing sites that complain about Obama's associates without examining his actual policies.

Currently on Alternet, there is a self congratulatory article claiming that this site does not promote dishonesty, and is supposedly more high-minded than the opposition ... then along comes a diversionary attack like this to blow it right out of the water, on the same day no less! LOL.

The personal background of any given political activist places a distant second to the actual issues at hand.

Sure, you might see the likes of Sean Hannity or O'reilly coming from a mile away, but when the stupidity comes from your own side it wipes you out. Use your own mind. See what the writer really did in this piece, and try to be more careful. Mindless agreement with everything "your side" says is never a good idea.

Most of the posters here complain about globalization. Locking poor people into low wage countries will ensure globalization. Allowing them to flee poor conditions abroad, often created by labor displacing US foreign direct investment and subsidized grain dumping which eliminates farmers from the market and causes unemployment and rural to urban migration, will create wage increases through labor shortages eventually steming the tide of outmigration to the US. Locking people into foreign poverty only promotes more US capital flight to low wage areas.

Diversity prevents racism and fascism. It creates new political coalitions and forces people to adopt tolerance in their daily lives as a survival strategy. Small town white Republican conservatism has gotten us into the current mess. Fresh cultural perspectives will get us out of it and save our democracy. Don't see this as a hostile invasion. See immigration as providing the fresh ideas, energies and aspirations that preserved American prosperity, uniqueness and greatness for over two centuries.
