Lou Dobbs Said He'd Be Happy to Triple Number of Legal Immigrants

A new book by a prominent progressive author contains a rather ironic revelation: CNN's Lou Dobbs -- the disgruntled television voice of anti-immigration sentiment -- says he would actually welcome millions of new immigrants into the United States.

"If we are to have a national debate and a national dialogue and a decision about national policy and we make a judgment that we are going to raise immigration levels - let's say that we double them, lets say that we triple them - sign me up," Dobbs is reported as saying in February 2007. "There is nothing in me that is a restrictionist whatsoever, and I realize that separates me from others who are against illegal immigration on the basis that there is too much immigration. I don't believe that. I do believe that we are not in control of our immigration policies or what is happening in this country. And that leaves me in despair."

The remark comes courtesy of David Sirota's just released book: "The Uprising: An Unauthorized Tour Of The Populist Revolt Scaring Wall Street And Washington," which documents the conflict between business interests, government policies and popular opinion on a variety of issues, from trade and the economy to immigration to Iraq.

And if the image of Dobbs welcoming immigrants arms-outstretched seems out of line with what the host, on his nightly show, seemingly represents, that's because it is.

While the CNN anchor was explicitly discussing a growth in "legal" immigration, he has rarely, if ever, expressed such a viewpoint on his show. Dobbs has built up his reputation and audience primarily on an ability to appeal to the fervent anti-immigration sentiment in some segments of the country. A recent Media Matters study showed that Lou Dobbs Tonight spent the most time of any cable news show "airing claims about immigrants draining government coffers and/or not paying taxes. Out of a total of approximately 260 broadcasts, Lou Dobbs Tonight featured these ideas on 71 programs, or more than one out of every four broadcasts -- and 39 percent of the programs on which he discussed immigration."

CINN did not return request for comment. But an earlier portion of Sirota's book does provide a window into what could be the anchor's defense: it's not about immigrants, it's about border security.

"'There is a group of people who would like to believe that somehow debating illegal immigration, the security of our borders or our ports, is somehow racially inspired,' [Dobbs] says, annoyed and tapping his hand on his desk. 'But there's never been an issue of race introduced into this discussion by me.'

Some of Dobbs's toughest critics grudgingly acknowledge that, at least rhetorically, the CNN anchor has not made bigoted remarks. 'Dobbs has steered clear of the racist comments,' acknowledged the Southern Poverty Law Center.

But these same critics say his one-sided focus on the wedge issue of illegal immigration - and his one-sided take on the issue - fuels anti-Hispanic xenophobia, because most illegal immigrants are Latino. He might respond to them with a 'my best friend is black' answer by citing his own marriage to a Mexican American. Or he might point to his move a few weeks ago to become a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. But he does none of that. Instead, he normally responds to them, as he is to me right now, that for him, the issue has nothing to do with race or even legal immigration levels - it is all about border security."

Even so, Dobbs's position has riled immigrant groups and even mainstream politicians. At a fundraiser in Florida this past Thursday night, Sen. Barack Obama accused of "ginning up" anti-immigration sentiment to such an extent that there has been a rise in hate crimes against Hispanics.

Added Cecilia Muñoz, vice president of the National Council of La Raza, the largest Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States: "I think he likes to see himself as somebody whose only problem is with illegal immigrants, but if you look at who is on his show and how his arguments are framed, it takes just seconds for him to get to his concerns about legal immigrants. It may not be the way he intends it, but boy is that the impact... It is not about illegal immigration, it is about something much bigger and it is the Latino community that continually feels under attack by him."

It isn't the truth of what I say that matters, it's how you choose to take it? Strange, inasmuch as it happens that almost the oldest (1735) of U.S. legal doctrines comes from the Peter Zenger trial, in which it was ruled that the truth cannot be held libelous. Epithets and epithetic labels hurled mindlessly by vacuous ideologues - nonsense like "racist," "sexist," and the like simply serve to demonstrate their own emptiness. How do such people expect to obtain hearing and justice from a societal system riddled with people like themselves and their ridiculously humanistic and effeminate emotionality?

Reduce ALL immigration

Well, he certainly would have solved the illegal immigration problem: all can come and no one will be illegal! Comprehensive immigration reform in spades.

The fact:
The United States is heading insanely toward a billion people. Just imagine every problem we have tripled. We will exterminate every bird, insect and other mammal; we will pave over every inch of forest; we will have to import all our food.

Illegal immigration must not be tolerated, but ALL immigration must be drastically reduced.

...in his views on legal immigrants and illegal aliens in our country. It's all the faux left idealogues who have tried to make him into something else entirely. That's why the faux left will get nowhere with the people in this country by lying about him.

We know the difference between the truth and the bullshit.

"Immigration policy should be generous; it should be fair; it should be flexible. With such a policy we can turn to the world, and to our own past, with clean hands and a clear conscience.... Some of yesterday’s immigrants…have supplied a continuous flow of creative abilities and ideas that have enriched our nation. The immigrants we welcome today and tomorrow will carry on this tradition and help us to retain, reinvigorate, and strengthen the American Spirit."
-John F. Kennedy

I'm an ever amazed at the comments made about Lou Dobbs' position on immigration that show a clear ignorance of reality, at best, or malicious distortion at worst. for starters, Stein says Dobbs has "rarely, if ever" has expressed on his show the view that he favors legal immigration while opposing illegal immigration. Perhaps Stein meant to say that he had rarely, if ever, watched Lou Dobbs' show to see if he has expressed such a view. If he had, he would have heard Dobbs make that distinction repeatedly, pointedly, and in detail.

Stein quotes Media Matters' analysis of Dobbs' position, but Media Matters itself fails, in its criticism of Dobbs, to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration, and Stein adopts Media Matters' flawed position that by making the case against illegal immigration, Dobbs is campaigning against all immigration and all immigrants, and because most illegal immigrants are Hispanic, Dobbs is, de facto, fanning racism against all Hispanic immigrants and Hispanics in general.

Stein also misquotes as her perpetuates) Barac Obama's misstatement that there has been a rise in hate crimes against Hispanics as a result of Dobbs' (and Rush Limbaugh's) comments (Stein's sentence does not even make syntactical sense). The numerical year-over-year increase in hate crimes against Hispanics has been less than the increase in Hispanic population, and proportionately than the increase against other minority groups.

Finally, Stein uncritically adopts the disingenuous statement by the National Council of La Raza's Cecelia Muñoz (who has been a guest on the program and knows better) as own in his closing, saying "it takes just seconds for him to get to his concerns about legal immigrants," a flat fabrication. Again, the fact is that anyone watching every episode of the show would be very hard pressed, if not utterly unable, to find Dobbs expressing any concerns whatever with legal immigration or legal immigrants. Either Stein has been lazy or he has allowed his agenda to supersede his sense of integrity.

By jumping on the bandwagon of those who would conflate legal immigration with illegal immigration in order to stymie informed discussion, and by failing to do his own research, Stein only muddies the debate.

And no, I don't have any connection whatever to Dobbs or CNN. I just watch.

Steinberg has an agenda

It is clear that Steinburger has an agenda when it comes to Lou Dobbs. Calling him a the king of anti-immigrants is an outright lie only a propagandist would stoop to.
Anyone who has ever watched and listened to Dobbs knows very well that he always distinguishes between legal and Illegal immigration. He states that we are the most generous nation when it comes to legal immigration and it's true.
To those talking about "comprehensive immigration reform", I have one question and one question only; tell me just ONE thing that is wrong with our present immigration system, yes the same one that is the most generous of any in the world? How do you reform a system that is the best already? I'm waiting.

Ignorance is Bliss - Especially When You Don't Watch

Dobbs has consistently said that he favors legal immigration over and over. His wife is Mexican-American! Yes, he is also against extension of HB1 Visas without some protection for American citizens. Companies like Microsoft, for instance, want more HB1 Visas so they can import cheap Indian computer techs and pay them half what Americans with the same skills expect. Somehow he can't find qualified Americans to fill his needs. Companies like Microsoft bring in cheap labor and those people are all but slaves. They can't look for other jobs, they have virtually no rights. What unlimited HB1 Visas do is force Americans to "compete" at a level that is untenable. Too often these visa holders find that they aren't being paid enough to live in an area like Seattle. A two bedroom apartment is often shared six or more people. There is a lot of discussion about why Americans don't become educated in fields like computer technology and engineering. Too often, they come out of college and can't find a job at a reasonable starting salary. Try watching Dobbs instead of listening to some of those groups who really want unlimited immigration for their particular ethnic group. It's easy to tar Dobbs with the racist name. I've watched him talk to the "pro-immigration" groups (they are really pro-illegal immigration groups). When he talks rationally, they sputter and resort to name calling.

Just To Be Clear

you have been demonizing Lou Dobbs position without ever listening to what he has been saying on this issue? Wow I was wondering if it was just those of us who post here that aren't heard and whose statements are cherrypicked but, it appears to be how the pro-illegal immigrant coalition frame their opposition. Now they have decided to use Dobbs position in favor of expanding legal immigration as if it is proof that those opposed to illegal immigration are softening. My only response to that is huh.

If it wasn't for news anchors and journalists like Lou Dobbs, O'Reilly and others. Americans would wander aimlessly, without knowing the truth about the illegal immigration invasion or anything else. Thanks to 'The people's' Internet and the cable television investigative reporters. The man and women in the street, would remain ignorant, until a new secretive AMNESTY would be passed. Just like yesterday the 'Sanctuary State' of California cash-strapped budget meltdown, enacted a State 'Dream Act'. Unable to pass this obnoxious law as a Federal mandate, the State Assembly and drafted by Fabian Nunez, pushed it through the Democratic controlled house. He has failed (as yet) to get drivers licenses for illegal foreign nationals, but shoved law allowing the children of illegal aliens, to get into state colleges and universities. Again Californian property owners will foot the bill, as with free health care and other benefits.

Illegal Immigrants are Bad for Our Country Because They Have Nothing to Lose

Who immigrates here illegally?

People with absolutely nothing keeping them in their native country.

If they haven't managed to make it in their native country what are the odds that they are going to be intellectuals in ours?

The immigration of above average IQ people is a good thing provided they don't have birth rates a lot higher than our own.

The immigration of normal IQ or below average IQ is not going to help keep us the strongest, smartest country in the world. We will end up losing ground as the most competitive, strongest nation.

The immigration of high birth rate cultures will essentially change our culture here.

Right now we are like Epcot Center with all their different exhibits from all the different countries all rolled into one country.

We have Italian food, Chinese food, Mexican food, Japanese food, Norwegian food, German food, etc available everywhere in about a 10-15 minute drive (barring the bible belt perhaps).

If we allow immigrants from countries with high birth rates that will change drastically over a few generations until our country becomes like theirs.

One last thing about immigration, lots of cultures isolate themselves upon moving here, they don't assimilate. They don't speak English amongst themselves or in the presence of others and they tend to group together all moving in to the same apartment complexes to live and interact only amongst members of their native culture.
