Xenophobia and Anti-Gay Legislation Galore: What's the Matter with Oklahoma?

By Richard L. Fricker, Consortium News. Posted May 29, 2008.

Oklahoma has become a laboratory in which the worst right-wing elements are ramming xenophobic and anti-gay legislation through the Legislature.

The Republican-dominated Oklahoma legislature is defining the frontier of xenophobic immigration laws, anti-Muslim bigotry, gay bashing and encouragement of gun-toting students -- with Democratic legislators often too timid to resist.

Rep. Randy Terrill, Republican chairman of the Revenue and Taxation Committee, has emerged as a hero of the "protect our borders" crowd by authoring a law, known as HB1804, that makes it a felony even to give an illegal immigrant a ride.

You also can't provide education, health care and many other services to undocumented immigrants, including infants. And, police are required to check the immigration status of anyone "suspected" of being in this country illegally.

If you thought such a draconian measure might face stiff opposition -- or at least a drawn-out political battle -- you'd be wrong. The bill sailed through the Oklahoma House, 88-9, with 35 of the 44 Democrats joining the Republicans, and then passed the Senate on a 41-6 vote with two-thirds of the Democrats lining up with Republicans.

After the law's passage, its extreme -- one might say un-Christian -- features prompted virtual declarations of civil disobedience from the Southern Baptist Convention and the Episcopal, Methodist, Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches, which announced they would not curtail aid to anyone.

Terrill then attacked Roman Catholic Bishop Edward Slattery of Tulsa as "misguided," accusing Catholics of opposing the law out of fear that it would curtail a growth in population and thus revenues for the church.

Terrill followed up his legislative victory by floating a "son of 1804," a bill that would forbid the issuance of birth certificates to a child if one parent was an illegal alien. That bill also sought confiscation of property for anyone caught violating HB1804.

The property-confiscation idea, however, was deemed too radical by the Oklahoma business community, which saw it as a threat to corporate owners. So, the follow-up bill got sidetracked.

Undeterred, Terrill proposed another anti-immigrant bill to make English the official language of Oklahoma.

When that bill died on a procedural vote in the Senate, Terrill enlisted the Washington lobby group ProEnglish, whose specialty is robo-calling, to make constituency calls to state senators.

One senator took umbrage and forwarded his calls to Terrill's office. Furious at this "cowardly act," Terrill crossed the rotunda threatening to "whip his ass."

Though Terrill's pressure tactics failed to revive the bill, it is expected to become a hot-button election issue this fall.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma business community, which mostly sat on the sidelines as HB1804 was passed, is now having second thoughts, worrying that the new law has cut into the labor force and thus corporate profits.

A significant number of Mexicans, both legal and illegal, have left the state to avoid harassment, while other laborers are living in fear.

As Terrill and his supporters mounted legal assaults against non-English-speaking immigrants, Republican colleague Rep. Sally Kern focused on what she viewed as an even graver danger: gays and lesbians. In April, she went before a local GOP meeting and labeled that threat worse than the one from al-Qaeda:

"Studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it's the death knell of this country. I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat. OK?

"'Cause what's happening now is they are going after, in schools, 2-year-olds, and this stuff is deadly, and it's spreading, and it will destroy our young people, and it will destroy this nation."

what college-bound young Okies do when they graduate from the local universities. Where do they go to find work? Their attitudes must be soooo out of sync with most Americans, who happen to live in large metropolitan areas, that they must appear as freaks. Who would hire them?

Nature, Nurture and Free Will

We human beings have, as a result of our evolution, genetic programs for both xenophobic, spiteful behavior and compassionate, altruistic behavior. We get mixed messages from our parents and society that inform our behavior. But at the end of the day, after nature and nurture, we choose whether we side with the demons or the angels.

It's tragic that conservative politicians and clergy appeal to the worst in our nature to get votes, rather than appealing to the best that is in us. Give Obama credit for doing that.

While there are several repulsive acts and attitudes recounted in this story, the simple refusal to accept a well-meaning gift from someone particularly strikes me as venal and immature. Are Americans become so childish that they cannot even receive the gift of a Quran politely. Perhaps these legislators need a time out, or an old-fashioned spanking. Didn't their mothers teach them correctly? Considering they are Republican legislators, maybe it was their nannies fault. When one receives a gift, one simply says thank you.

Been there Too- My sister lives outside Tulsa.Beautiful state, but nearly all appear to have been beaten repeatedly about the head as children. Is there any laws regarding marriying your 'Brother Daddy'...Though Not.
Another state in dire need of Real Teachers, healthcare workers and Condoms.
Quick Story of a visit there- Went 'antique Shopping' found a Lake Shell about 4" long- they wanted $16.00 for it. My sister lives on a Lake, while walking on th ebeach I found about 10 shells about 8" Long - Ran to tell my sister we had hit pay dirt- we could sell those in town for At least $30.00. Also Meet a creepy, but friendly Okie, he showed me his 'fine crystal' platters he'd been collecting and was determined to buy any more he would run across in the future- They were 'Dime Store' relish trays, He also had a 'Jeeecuzzi, Hot tub' for his hunting & horseback riding guests - it was a 4 ' hole with a old pool liner, but it did have some 'PURDY' party lights strung around and was a great place to catch Big bullfrogs, which of course 'are some good eats'(along w/ possum and squirrels. Hellova BBQ'er too!OOOHHH If only I could show a picture of this guys place-Beyond Belief. Also as a Horse & Dog person, I was damn tempted to call the Humane Society, but realized this would probably be seen as typical level of care. Truely WE have some 'undeveloped Country' here in this nation Too!

His home town is segregated. Black people on one side, white people on the other. They use the same public places like bars, but there's a black side of the bar and a white side.

Not that most wealthy people from metropolitan areas are much better. How many "colored" people are living in affluent areas like Potomac or Bethesda Maryland? Not very many.

Tolerant...from afar. Just like the politicians in Washington - few of which are stupid/cruel enough to send their children to D.C. public schools.

Anti-Immigrant Measures Are Blatantly Unconstitutional
Posted by: SkeeterVT1 on May 29, 2008 4:01 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There is little doubt that the Republican Party in Oklahoma and many other states has been taken over by theocratic fascists, whose xenophobia and homophobia is bad enough. But their utter contempt of the U.S. Constitution is even worse.

Their bill that would forbid the issuance of birth certificates to a child if one parent was an illegal alien is a blatant violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, which states quite explicitly that all persons born in the United States are citizens of the United States -- period.

The bill also sought confiscation of property for anyone caught violating Oklahoma's anti-illegal immigrant law. It, again, makes no exception for the native-born and naturalized U.S.-citizen children and other relatives of illegal immigrants and therefore is unconstitutional under the Fourth Amendment's ban on unreasonable searches and seizures.

Where is the American Civil Liberties Union? Why is it not challenging this Draconian measure in federal court?

Whether the Dems or Reps controlled any part of that state government, bigotry and intolerance hasn't changed except for the worse. The state was founded on racism against the Native Indians so don't expect that state to be any easier than KS. In any case, the question this article ought to beg is "Why are we suddenly concerned about social conservatives going out of bounds when we should have paid attention to the horrendous povertization of that state for the past 30 years??"

known as HB1804, that makes it a felony even to give an illegal immigrant a ride
--------------
This is so much easier than addressing the core issue of NAFTA/free trade - the root cause of the flood of illegal immigrants.

The GOP under the Bush Family Dynasty engaged in a wasteful 15 year effort to turn the nation's burgeoning Hispanic population into a GOP voting bloc....naively thinking that they could build upon the small, but hardcore block of anti-Castro Cuban-American Right Wing voters. This effort has been a complete failure...so now the GOP is turning on this segment to focus exclusively on the angry white vote.

These Laws Are An Extension
Posted by: desidid on May 29, 2008 5:11 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
of the frustration being felt by blue collar middle-class workers. Is it possible the lack of enforcement of the laws from 1986 was intended? The prison industrial complex is the largest growing business sector in America. The NY Times reported 2 years ago that we have 600 secret prisons, that were identified as a precaution to contain the illegal immigrant population. If America was a chessboard the executive branch and business would be the players. Nothing about the lack of enforcement or the number of illegal immigrants allowed to enter is an accident. And these laws will continue to appear. Remember at one time workplaces in America had signs stating "Irish need not apply," the Japanese occupied stalls I would later clean at Santa Anita racetrack, and the term Spic originally was intended as a derogatory term for Italians. There is a plan afoot, it is intended to keep people off guard. The Left has undermined the incorporation of immigrants by refusing to educate it's base to the history, and by focusing on one group of illegal immigrants. They continue to widen the chasm between citizen and immigrant by narrowing the focus. Until the Left begins to educate all immigrants and citizens to the history of pitting immigrants against the poorest Americans these totalatarian measures will continue. As long as the Left takes what appears to be an "if you're not with us you're against us" position, rather than learning from history, I see no brighter days ahead for some time. How many times have I read post which villify America's working poor, in support of illegal immigrants? This is a problem the Left needs to address and it needs to happen sooner rather than later.

Gee . . . what a surprise! Unaware, under-educated, narrow-minded people venting their anger and frustrations towards easy targets like gays and immigrants. Like Bush attacking Iraq, they go after a convenient and easy enemy to further their false sense of American supremacy. Simple-minded humans need some kind if reinforcement when their envisioned way of life is threatened. Interesting times ahead.

WHO IS REALLY DESTROYING AMERICAN VALUES?
Posted by: bryangalt on May 29, 2008 5:44 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Well, the answer is simple: the Legislative body of Oklahoma and like-minded politicians and individuals that support their very un-American way of thinking.

Are gay and lesbian citizens calling for all straight citizens to convert or die? No. Are Hipanic citizens (legal or not) trying to tell the precious white people what to do? No. Are either of these groups bombing Oklahoma. No

Wait, as I recall, the only terrorist bombing in America by an American happened in Oklahoma and it was a white person.

Hmm. So, gays, lesbians and Hispanics: peaceful, mind-your-own-fu**ing business types who are just trying to exercise their rights to the pursuits of happiness.

Then we have WHITE AMERICAN CITIZEN terrorist blowing up federal buildings, children and all, along with CRACKPOT RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS who are so determined to get their way that they are willing to betray the constitution, hell, even their own fake religious belief to get it.

WHO IS IT THAT REPRESENTS THE REAL DANGER TO AMERICA? WHO IS IT THAT IS TRYING TO SUBVERT AMERICA INTO SOME SORT OF RELIGIOUS/FACIST STATE WHERE FEAR AND HARASSMENT ARE COMMON?

I think everyone knows that answer, especially the people making these outrages laws.

Could some one explain ?

As I understand it, the main reason the Gay Community wants fully legal marriage rights is so they can adopt children, if they so choose. Is that right? So, what about the children's rights? Does each child have the right to both a mother and a father, or not? Every boy needs a loving, friendly and well informed father; and every girl needs a loving, friendly and well informed mother. Boys and girls get their understanding of how to be men and women from their parents behavior, so in order for that to happen, they need both a father and a mother - is that right? I've been in favor of civil union for gay people because it appears to harm no one. But further than that I think the children's interests should come forst and foremost.

This is a response to your views of the Catholic faith. The views of the faith are open to all people no matter the geolgraphic region. The faith does not shun individuals in any manner or way. In fact the faith welcome immigrants and provides protection for them in the United States. Some individual and groups do not agree with this. The Catholic Church provides protection for all people no matter what type of problems exist.

a "high-falutin" article

I live in Nebraska, and we have a saying for the type of attitude displayed in this article and many of the associated posts:

"high-falutin"

It is a word that means anything pompous, self-righteous, conceited, and more than a little arrogant.

It is fully displayed by the author of this article, and so many of the posts in reply. And it illustrates fully why the Left and Progressives make so little headway among people like those in Oklahoma (or Nebraska, for that matter).

I am a Progressive and also a life-long farmer, but the the preachy, holier-than-though, judgemental attitudes so prominent among a certain segment of the Left, comes out in spades in this article.

Especially--you dudes on the Urban Left--stop scolding the middle-class working-class Joes for being concerned about illegal immigration. The flood of illegals is NOT automatically a racist issue with people in rural areas, but an economic one.

You can't dismiss all of us in the midwest as ignorant, racist, un-enlightened, and un-washed. Just because we don't happen to live on the Coast and don't eat tofu.

Yes--I know that being pro-illegal immigrant is one of the mandatory basic belief canons of the True Progressive--but don't automatically dismiss those who don't kow-tow to this party line.

When it comes to illegal immigration, this is what this nation should be doing, not just OK, AZ and now MO. Last I recall, we have a immigration policy, like other nations around the world. Thank you Sooner State for taking a lead in this on going problem.

Reading this disturbed me to the core. It just reeks of facism and communism.

Because of this "authoring a law, known as HB1804, that makes it a felony even to give an illegal immigrant a ride." you now have to ask anyone entering your car for a drive for proof of citizenship to protect yourself from prosecution if they happen to be undocumented as citizens. So now if I get in your car you have to ask me for my "PAPERS". Yeah remember them old war movies where the Germans were always stopping people and asking for their papers to prove who they were. And they did that to prove that folks were German. Same thing in Communist Russia. Could you ever travel or walk there without your "PAPERS"

And lets not forget "police are required to check the immigration status of anyone "suspected" of being in this country illegally." Another case of "PAPERS PLEASE" at the whim of the countries law enforcement.

And what about ""son of 1804,....That bill also sought confiscation of property for anyone caught violating HB1804." Now I have to ask you for your papers no matter what interaction we have! I am now forced by government policy to look at all my fellow citizens as possible criminals I may want to avoid just in case they are involved in something I know nothing about. THIS IS EVEN WORSE THAN GUILT BY ASSOCIATION. THIS IS GUILT BY CONTACT.

And the scariest thing I read in the whole article was this "Meanwhile, the Oklahoma business community, which mostly sat on the sidelines as HB1804 was passed, is now having second thoughts, worrying that the new law has cut into the labor force and thus corporate profits."

First they ignore this stuff, to their own peril as free citizens, and then wake up after the fact and their only consideration is monetary and not societal.

Oklahoma Legislature

Oklahoma has an interesting political history. Our state legislature was the last, or at least one of the last in the sourth to retain a democratic majority in both the house and the senate, losing its majority after the 2000 election. In the last election, 2006, the democrats retained at least a tie in the senate, with a democratic Lt. Governor, which can break voting ties in the senate. We also have a democratic Governor. Now our Governor and Lt. Governor are not liberal by any means, but the Oklahoma GOP platform is and has been so reactionary that common sense in state politics appears far left wing.
Things could be much worse but our republican leadership keeps failing to pay taxes or violating campaign regulations to the point that they are forced into resign.
Specifically, the desired Law for English has met with powerful foes, one such foe is Cherokee Nation Principal Chief , Chad Smith, who has gone on record in today's Tulsa World saying he will fight any future attempts to make English the official state language.
It's crazy politics here, but the rent is cheap.

No wonder leftists are always in the political wilderness (except in LA and NYC). The blogs here are appalling - complete generalizations and stereotypes about Oklahomans all being redneck, ignorant, incestual hicks. If a right-wing hack used the same words as you, but instead inserted the word "gay" or "black" you would be outraged. Yet many of you do the same.

I agree that Oklahoma is a nutty state. I live just across the Red River in Texas. We look at Okies as the retards who live in the attic. They have similar views of Texans. But it's mostly good natured rivalry vis-a-vis Oklahoma vs.Texas football game.

An anecdote. Some friends and I went camping at Beaver's Bend State Park in Southeastern Oklahoma. We had the place to ourselves until Friday night. We were expecting to see other campers. What we got was a deluge of Mexicans. Truck after van after car load. Not only did they fill the place but they put their tents literally touching ours. The next morning at 7 am they woke us because they were using OUR table right next to our tent to cook breakfast. I was incredulous. One of my friends, who is Columbian, said that is the way they live in Mexico. Right on top of each other. They didn't know any better.

I consider myself a progressive. But at that moment I was pissed and thought, "Why the hell are these illegals able to use OUR park? I'm a freaking citizen!"

Unfortunately, in America we are trained to treat symptoms not root causes. We try to build fences to keep out illegals when we should be deconstructing NAFTA and other policies that cause them to fall into poverty in their own country and seek better lives in ours.

It is obvious that people on this board do not see eye to eye with the policies the people of Oklahoma believe in and voted their politicians in to execute. And while I disagree with many of the tactics used in Oklahoma I think that it is overall a positive that such things can happen in our country.

We are a federated republic. We were created as such due to the then wide expanse and now even wider expanse of our geographical territory and cultures. People in Texas are unlike those in Michigan, or Vermont, or Alaska. As am I, a New Yorker, different from a Sooner. People separated from the culture within OK who disagree with such policies, do not have to live with them or contend with them. What a wonder our federated republic is. Conversely, California can have gay marriage because its population supports it. This would sicken many Sooners just as much as OK's policies sicken many progressives here. But the citizens of OK support these policies, and so long as they are constitutional and do not overturn federal law, these polcies are legitimate products of democracy in action.

My point is, we don't have to live there. The people who live there made these decisions and we should all respect not only their culture and place as Americans; but also the principles of democracy that this federated republic was founded upon. By not respecting this decision of the people of OK, one believes that they should be able to impose their will on people far away and culturally different. Kind of like the Neo-Cons, but on a smaller scale.

Oklahoma Under Attack
Posted by: penobscotdziekuje@yahoo.com on May 29, 2008 10:18 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I like Oklahoma. It's a pretty state with a lot of nice people in it. I've visited the state several times and have met people in Elk City and other places. My father lived in Elk City and was about to marry before he became ill and passed away.
I know what is going on there doesn't reflect the attitude of most of its citizens for the spate of laws passed which smell of xenophobia and backwards thinking by the Legislature.
But honestly, what is Oklahoma worried about? Texas beating OU in the annual Red River Shootout? You should worry more about tornados and unemployment than a terrorist attack. When those sirens go off, it's not an attack by the enemy.
The Koran is ONLY a book, like the Bible, right? Not every Muslim fits the popular stereotype caricature we know today; and not every Latino(a) is an "illegal" human. Your threats are imagined.
It's like that "Twilight Zone" episode where visitors from outer space dismantle a city's electrical system and the townsfolk go crazy, blaming each other for the blackout. In sum, a way of life was disrupted by an unknown source. It made people panic and nearly resorted to violence.
It wasn't too long ago a distressed young man drove a rented truck filled with explosives and destroyed a building in the capital and killed more than 150 people. Note: he wasn't dark-skinned. I don't think Muslims are committing nearly all of the crimes that occur in the Sooner State.
No state is perfect; here in California we seem to fight and enact xenophobic legislation to crack down on illegal immigration, racial profiling, etc. and we're supposed to be "progressive" and "liberal" (politically speaking, not socially) and we're in a dogfight to do the morally right thing concerning California's civil rights. But, Oklahoma, like us in the Left Coast, have more to worry about than security and drafting laws in haste in a more complex world where our leaders and a confused public don't understand.
Every state is undergoing a dramatic shift in its demographic makeup. That's the way it is. We may not like it, but that's life. Either we adapt or perish under our ignorance.
Laws are never permanent and let's hope that Oklahoma won't do damage to its social fabric before it becomes too late.

And they need to make our friends from south of the border feel very very unwelcome. Trust me on that one.

As their state license plate says, "Oklahoma is OK." A combination of Republican reactionaries, Christian right-wingers, rednecks and Limbaugh types run and own this state. Of course, the "illegal alien," is the first target. Because Oklahoma is another state where the rich don't have to pay taxes, their is never enough money for essential services. But, for Okies, it's all the "illegal aliens" fault, of course. Next are the gays, they are simply "anti-Christian" for the Bible toting Okies and cannot be tolerated. But, finally we come to the real troublemaker. The subversives, and various Democratic types. Why, they all must be plotting the next attack on America. Plus these subversives don't like the pro-rich, pro-Christian, anti-gay and anti- illegal alien stance of most Okies. Therefore, they should be the next target of the Okies. People to be run out of the state, as soon as possible.

I like to eat meat and love my gas-guzzling pickup. It isn't gonna be easy to turn me around and make me a SanFran liberal, but it is possible. BTW--I was a swimming all-stater this year and voted "cutest guy" in the senior class. Any takers?

Nothing new here, this is a very old recipe: Wrap your rabid political ambitions in quasi-mysticism, create a mythical "master race" with an equally mythical "golden age" receding into the distant past and legends of super-human accomplishments back in the days of blonde-haired, blue-eyed, lily-white, English-speaking racial purity. It's pretty easy to spot people who are not pure "American" by their non-conformity to God's designated standard of ideal humanity. Sound familiar? The only thing different is English as the required language.

I guess I'm used to Republicans (and the Klan)hating everyone who is not exactly like themselves, but it still really irritates me when they pretend that the Bible has anything to do with their hate. That dog won't hunt. You can't blame God for your own personality disorders.

Why are you picking on a state these laws are federal laws?
Posted by: wishninja on May 29, 2008 8:15 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
According to the federal laws (Federal Immigration and Nationality Act) it is a felony to transport, or aid an illegal immigrant.

A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment

I understand the Koran and the gay issues pissing you off but those were not laws. However, those immigration laws the state is enacting and enforcing are federal laws. So basically it should be the law in all 50 states.

Many of the people here love to stand up for illegal immigrants because it is so easy to do from your urban or suburban home and working your cushy, air-conditioned office jobs...

...but the problem is much more complex than you realize. Illegal (emphasis on ILLEGAL) immigrants are flooding in to many of America's small towns and rural areas and undercutting the wages and lowering the living standards of LEGAL Americans. Many jobs which used to pay living or good wages now barely pay minimum wage, if even that.

How many blue-collar workers do you actually know? If you know actually know some of these workers, you might also know that they are currently having many employment difficulties because immigrants (often illegal) are making it extremely difficult for these workers to make a living anymore because, as I said above, they are undercutting the once-livable wages of so many legal American workers.

Race/ethnicity isn't as much an issue as people like to think. If we had millions of Germans or Swedes flooding in to America and massively undercutting the wages of Americans and lowering the living standards people would be just as angry. It doesn't matter if these people are White, Black, Brown, Yellow, whatever. It's an ECONOMIC issue, not a RACIAL/ETHNIC one. People in the urban areas in the Northeastern United States had the same gripes against Irish and Jewish immigrants (both illegal and legal) a few decades ago because they were moving en masse to those areas and aslo undercutting the wages of native-born Americans...and both of those groups are considered White.

I don't agree with the supposedly anti-gay legislation being passed in OK if that is in fact the case, but I agree that OK has the right (indeed, the duty) to protect their local economy from gradual decimation by illegal immigrants. After all, they have native and LEGAL citizens to think of FIRST, people with deep roots in the state and not simply a bunch of nomadic workers with no roots in the area, workers who can simply 'move on' again once the work dries up, thus leaving the citizens native to area high and dry. Again, rural or small town workers who have lived in certain areas for generations are now losing many jobs to nomadic immigrants with no roots to these areas -- how do you think that makes them feel? How would you like to be forced to sell your old family farm where you lived cleanly and mostly self-sufficiently for generations and be herded in to a city to work for hourly wages just to make a skyscraper capitalist more rich?

Many of these immigrants (whether legal or illegal) aren't fair competition in the economic sense, either. They often don't have families to take care of, and thus they will work for inhuman wages which the average American can not live on. They often live in extremely crowded and terible conditions and share rides to save money, while legal, native-born Americans still have to to pay for a house, car, etc. They don't pay for insurance and often don't pay taxes but still use local hospitals and other public services. And on and on...

We need to help Mexico develop or repair their economy so that they don't need to flood in to America looking for work. Whether this involves scrapping NAFTA or something else I'm not sure, but something simply needs to be done because many American blue-collar workers are suffering terribly under the onslaught of all of these illegal immigrants who are undercutting their wages and destroying their way of life.

Judging People is Pointless

Oklahoma, despite all of these things, is slowly moving towards becoming a blue state. They elected a democratic Governor who is attempting to change a lot of things but is also being shot down by the legislature. He opposed, for example, the law requiring women to have a sonogram before being able to obtain an abortion. He was voted down. He managed to reverse the law against tattoos, which had been on the books for a long time.

My husband grew up in Oklahoma, and remembers it as a place where people mostly minded their own business. For reference, he was raised as an atheist (in the bible belt!) and doesn't recall being judged by most people - in fact, he says most people didn't talk about politics or religion.

I think it's silly to judge the population of any state based on the actions of legislature. Oklahoma is a varied state with several big cities where diverse populations reside. But it's also low population, low education, low tolerance in many places. It takes a while to balance those opposing viewpoints out.

How many of us, in more liberal states, agree with our legislators? I disagreed so strongly with my state's views on gay marriage that I went halfway across the country to get married. If someone were to judge me based on their views - judge my intelligence, my tolerance - I'd be offended. I didn't vote for those people and they don't represent my personal views. How many people in Oklahoma feel the same way?

..and yet the musical Oklahoma is sssoooo camp. Now i'm not a Christian, but I do get very annoyed, about the theological inaccuracies of the twisted ,religion of the US right.
The Republican right wing/evangelical crossover, appear to be adherents to a very thin, and decontextualised Bible.Did Jesus, really go around endlessly droning on about gays and Muslims?Of course he didn't..in fact, never once in any recordings of his words, did he ever mention gay love, yet it must have been all around him.
If God,created man in his own image, then the madcap evangelical's have recreated Jesus in their image.
These mammonites, seem to be,about the least Christian Christian,s since Tomas De Torquemada.
America and the World, have much more pressing issues, than bashing gays surely?
I wonder how much effect this bogus, religion is having on our world? Is the defense of Israel, linked to a beleif in the endtimes? Is the attack on Islam, similarly linked to a fundamentalist (ie fundamentally wrong),reading of the new testament?
Bush claims,to have a hotline to God ('nurse, quick,quick...fetch the medication, this dimwit, thinks that God is talking to him").He doesn't..and the world is full of people of every political extreme, who thinks God talks to them.
I love the lyrics,by the British one man band The The ..
"God doesn't live in the yankee dollar,God doesn't plant the bombs for Hezbollah"
and
"If the real Jesus Christ, was to stand up today,
He'd be gunned down cold ,by the CIA".

Personally I beleive,that the very human,and humanist Jesus,has been misrepresented,very badly,by US Evangelicals..and other churches.

The problem with the more right wing, uptight Oklahoma citizen's,is that they can't dance.Think about it,gay hating,Latino hating, black hating..that results in missing out on disco,Parliament,Funkadelic,Sylvester,hi-energy,house,techno etc.In fact getting "the funk"is vital to these uptight, repressed people.
I would like to propose a campaign to aid,the bigots in getting the funk/groove.This approach could change America, and the World.
One state or nation under a groove, would be a happier place to live, with more love, and confidence to go round.Who could go cross-burning,if they had experienced dancing,to disco inferno,in a top gay club.?
Redneck's are ashamed,that they can't dance,this makes them hate themselves,and all other's.
Have pity ,because redneck's need your help.
Can you support a redneck, and help him to get,the gift of funk?

While running the risk of adding to the let's-bash-a-state vibe in some of the posts, I'd still like to share some of my favorite quotes from this person. This person who says that OB-GYN doctors who perform abortions should get the death penalty ("I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life.”). Oh, and also protested a showing a Shindler's List because it featured nudity.

“And I thought I would just share with you what science says today about silicone breast implants. If you have them, you're healthier than if you don't. In fact, there's no science that shows that silicone breast implants are detrimental and, in fact, they make you healthier.”

“Lesbianism is so rampant in some of the schools in southeast Oklahoma that they'll only let one girl go to the bathroom. Now think about it. Think about that issue. How is it that that's happened to us?”

“… The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power. ... That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today. Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That’s a gay agenda.”

Genius, pure genius...

Wait, there's more!
Okies are not all morons, we just elect clowns like Inhoffe. The state has always been majority democrat but the power structure descends from Skelly, Sinclair, Phillips, Getty, Texaco, etc.
The congress just passed a bill demanding that all women seeking abortions must have an ultrasound. They can opt to look away. I'll bet some megachurch donor/preacher own a medical equipment company. It always comes down to money.
On a similar note:
It dawned on me that's the story with stem cell reseach; if government makes the breakthrough, no Pharma can patent it and charge whatever they want. My chronically ill daughter can afford methadone because it was the UK NIH that discovered it, not Squibb.
