Eliot Spitzer Leaving Current TV

Spitzer says his decision was prompted by the channel's sale to Al Jazeera.

Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has announced that he is leaving "Viewpoint," his Current TV show, an 8 pm program that featured such progressive voices as Paul Krugman and Matt Taibbi.

Spitzer, who took over hosting the show from Keith Olbermann, told theNew York Times that Current's sale to Al Jazeera had prompted his decision to depart. “Moving forward, their mission will be different,” Spitzer told theTimes -- more international newscasts, less liberal talk about the news.

He also said, “For me, journalism has been more a matter of projecting a particular approach to covering policies, to covering issues … And that doesn’t fit with their vision of what they are going to do.”

Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom have also said they would leave the network, which is to be called Al Jazeera America.
