Malaysia Set to Execute More People for Drug Offenses

Last month, six people were sentenced to death for drug trafficking by a Malaysian court. Two are Malaysian and the rest are Indian nationals (India is another country that maintains the death penalty for drug offenses). While Malaysia has taken steps to make the death penalty for certain drug offenses non-mandatory, slow implementation of the law and the retention of the death penalty means that many more will executed in the name of the war on drugs.

United Nations and World Health Organization Call for Drug Decriminalization

In a joint statement, the United Nations (UN) and World Health Organization (WHO) expressed their support for countries in the review and repeal of laws that criminalize drug use and possession of drugs for personal use. This joint statement, which addresses discrimination in health care settings, comes in light of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aim to “ensure that no one is left behind”.

New York Times Glosses Over Harms of Alcohol Prohibition in India

Last month, the New York Times published an article declaring the prohibition of alcohol in the Indian state of Bihar a success. The author cites the decline in consumption and sale of alcohol, falling crime rates and increased household spending as evidence of the success of prohibition, emphasizing the leading role played by Bihari women in the enforcement of the law. The article skims over that fact that 42,000 people have been arrested and are awaiting trial.
