KBR Supplied Water Makes US Troops Sick

If they supported the troops any better, they'd be killing them.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Dozens of U.S. troops in Iraq fell sick at bases using "unmonitored and potentially unsafe" water supplied by the military and a contractor once owned by Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, the Pentagon's internal watchdog says.

A report obtained by The Associated Press said soldiers experienced skin abscesses, cellulitis, skin infections, diarrhea and other illnesses after using discolored, smelly water for personal hygiene and laundry at five U.S. military sites in Iraq.

The Pentagon's inspector general found water quality problems between March 2004 and February 2006 at three sites run by contractor KBR Inc., and between January 2004 and December 2006 at two military-operated locations.

It was impossible to link the dirty water definitively to all the illnesses, according to the report. But it said KBR's water quality "was not maintained in accordance with field water sanitary standards" and the military-run sites "were not performing all required quality control tests."

Obama Secretly Meets With John Edwards

The plot thickens....
Sen. Barack Obama "paid a secret visit to his former rival, John Edwards, in quest of his endorsement on Sunday," The Politico reports.
"The meeting in Chapel Hill, N.C., where Edwards lives, is the latest effort by Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) to win 'the Edwards primary' -- the heatedly sought endorsement of the third-place finisher in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination."
Like Clinton's visit earlier this month, Obama managed to pull off his without the notice of the national press corps. However. WTVD-TV claims to have video of the visit which it will air later today.
Mark Halperin explains why Edwards' endorsement matters.

Obama has said not to expect much out of the meeting:
"I don't think there's any imminent news," Obama told CBS affiliate WISC-TV this afternoon. "We were exchanging views, he was giving me some thoughts, and obviosuly he's gonna be a big force in the Democratic party for many years to come."
Campaign officials would not specify whether the meeting included a promise of an Edwards endorsement.
Also, AP reports tonight that Clinton has been wooing the Edwardses more effectively:
People close to the Edwardses, speaking privately, say they have been torn about whom to support. The former North Carolina senator is concerned that Obama may not be ready for the presidency and that his health care plan is inferior. But Edwards was highly critical of Clinton - her policies, her ties to special interests and her character - during his campaign, making it more difficult to support her now.

Lawmakers Vote to Hold Rove and Bolten in Contempt

I won't believe it until I see the perp walk.
(WASHINGTON) - The Senate Judiciary Committee voted for a contempt citation against Karl Rove and Josh Bolten on Thursday, the latest move in an inquiry into possibly politically motivated firings of federal prosecutors.
Even if the citations receive floor votes, the issue likely would land in federal courts in a drawn-out constitutional showdown over what White House information should be made available for congressional oversight.
Any court proceedings would almost certainly survive the Bush administration. "They should be fully aware of the futility of pressing ahead on this," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said. "It has long been understood that, in circumstances like these, that the constitutional prerogatives of the president would make it a futile and purely political act for Congress to refer contempt citations to U.S. attorneys."

Scooter Libby to Drop Appeal in CIA Leak Case

This post, written by Paddy, originally appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Films Blog

This has me flummoxed. Doesn't this mean if there is no "trial pending" that the White House and Libby can be questioned about the Plame leak?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is dropping his appeal in the CIA leak case, his attorney said Monday.
Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted of perjury and obstruction for lying about his conversations with reporters about outed CIA operative Valerie Plame.
Why would Libby take away the White House's "We do not discuss ongoing legal matters" card?

And who will be the first reporter to figure this out?

Dana Peroxide is going to be doing a presser at about 1230p EST. If you're near a teevee, this would be a must watch moment. Let's see what she says about Libby this time. (you know they've been scrambling all this morning trying to figure out which lie what to say.)

Anti-Gay Boy Scout Leader Arrested for Molesting Boys

This post, written by Paddy, originally appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Films Blog

It just has to be hard fact by now that anytime someone obsesses about gay people in pretty much any way you're going to find....
Scout Leader in California Accused of Abuse
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 6 - A scout leader who once sued the City of Berkeley for challenging a national Boy Scout ban on members who are gay or atheist has been arrested on felony charges that for at least five years he sexually abused young males in the troops he led.
Mr. Evans sued the city in his role as a leader of the Sea Scouts, an affiliate program of the Boy Scouts. The city, after providing free berthing for a Sea Scouts boat for 60 years, said in 1998 that a Boy Scout policy barring gay scouts and atheists violated Berkeley's rules against discrimination. The city said the Scouts would have to leave the berth or pay $500 a month rent.

Firefighters Being Trained to Spy on US Citizens

The hits just keep on coming-
AP IMPACT: Firefighter help on terrorism
WASHINGTON - Firefighters in major cities are being trained to take on a new role as lookouts for terrorism, raising concerns of eroding their standing as American icons and infringing on people's privacy.
Unlike police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel don't need warrants to access hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings each year, putting them in a position to spot behavior that could indicate terrorist activity or planning.
But there are fears that they could lose the faith of a skeptical public by becoming the eyes of the government, looking for suspicious items such as building blueprints or bomb-making manuals or materials.
This is just a set up for rampant abuse. Imagine all the ways this could be interpreted-

How Far Will Bush Let Musharraf Go?

This post, written by Paddy, originally appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Films Blog
"What exactly would it take for the president to conclude Musharraf has crossed the line? Suspend the constitution? Impose emergency law? Beat and jail his political opponents and human rights activists? He's already done all that. If the president sees Musharraf as a democrat, he must be wearing the same glasses he had on when he looked in Vladimir Putin's soul."

Commonwealth suspends Pakistan
KAMPALA (AFP) - A Commonwealth ministerial committee Thursday decided to suspend Pakistan from the 53-nation bloc pending the return of the rule of law following the imposition of emergency earlier this month.
"CMAG suspended Pakistan forthwith from the councils of the Commonwealth, pending the restoration of democracy and the rule of law in that country," according to a statement read by Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon.

Homeland Security Advisor Fran Townsend Resigns

Just now on air on MSNBC. Looking for more.

Homeland security aide leaving White House
Frances Fragos Townsend, President Bush's homeland security adviser, will announce Monday that she's leaving the White House, a senior administration official told Politico.
"It's an important job and she was good at it," the official said. "She will stay until her successor is identified, which is immensely helpful."
Townsend, the assssistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, was one of the president's most valued and trusted advisers, with a phone on her desk connecting her to No. 10 Downing Street, the British prime minister's office.
A former mob prosecutor from Manhattan, Townsend was put in charge of the White House's "lessons learned" inquest after the botched response to Hurricane Katrina.
Now, I may be overwrought, but when I see "Manhattan", "Mob" and "Prosecutor" all in one sentence, my Giuliani bell goes off. Hmmm.

Republican Accused of Groping Four Women in Four Separate Incidents

A 3rd District judge this week scuttled Republican leader Ozwald Balfour's efforts to disqualify the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office from prosecuting him for allegedly groping, or attempting to grope, four women.
Four sex assault cases filed against Balfour in 2005 were still unresolved last fall when he threw his support - and the free services of his two media consulting companies - to Republican district attorney candidate Lohra Miller.
He is charged with three second-degree felony counts of forcible sexual abuse and one count of attempted forcible sexual abuse, a third-degree felony.

A group of 9/11 conspiracy theorists heckled Republican presidential front-runner Rudy Giuliani as supporters booed and chanted "Rudy" at a campaign stop in Loveland Saturday.

"He covered up criminal evidence that was on the scene," he said.

Male Cop In Red Thong Arrested for Sex In Public Bathroom

Strongsville- A police officer who coached youth football has been relieved of both duties after having illicit sex in a public restroom while wearing red thong underwear.

Daniel Deusenberry of Strongsville was suspended last month from the Wakeman Police Department and the Strongsville Football League.

He had sexual encounters in a bathroom in the Mill Stream Reservation on four occasions in March, June and July, according to a Cleveland Metroparks' police report.

Maybe the idea of touring public bathrooms isn't that crazy.

Priest accused of stalking Conan O'Brien

Wow. A priest no less.
NEW YORK (AP) - A priest has been arrested on charges of stalking late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien by writing him threatening notes on parish letterhead, contacting his parents and showing up at his studio, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The Rev. David Ajemian, a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, was arrested last week while trying to enter a taping session of NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien at New York's Rockefeller Plaza, said Barbara Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan prosecutor's office.
Ajemian referred to himself as "your priest stalker" in one note and complained of not being allowed in to see an earlier taping of the O'Brien show, court papers say.
"Is this the way you treat your most dangerous fans?" the note said.

Pat Robertson Endorses Rudy Giuliani

This post, written by Paddy, originally appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Films Blog

Wow. Talk about hypocrites.

Pat Robertson is supposed to be having a press conference at 930a EST to announce his support of Guiliani per MSNBC, not online yet.

This just proves they really don't have any core values and they'll just throw any morals under the bus to make sure they keep power. Rudy Giuliani, pro-choice, pro-gay, thrice married with all sorts of dubious connections the Evangelical choice. Hope the real Christians take this as a wake-up call.

Found it at the WaPo-
Pat Robertson To Endorse Giuliani
Pat Robertson, one of the most influential figures in the social conservative movement, will announce his support for Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid this morning in Washington, D.C., according to sources familiar with the decision.
Pat Robertson's endorsement of Rudy Giuliani is a significant blow to Mitt Romney, who has worked hard to court evangelical leaders. Robertson's support was coveted by several of the leading Republican candidates and provides Giuliani with a major boost as the former New York City mayor seeks to convince social conservatives that, despite his positions on abortion and gay rights, he is an acceptable choice as the GOP nominee.

Immigration Director Hosts Party With Guest In Blackface

This post, written by Paddy, originally appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Blog

This woman is just too much.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Department of Homeland Security will investigate a Halloween costume party hosted by a top immigration official and attended by a man dressed in a striped prison outfit, dreadlocks and darkened skin make-up, a costume some say is offensive, the department's secretary said.
Julie Myers, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and host of the fundraising party, was on a three-judge panel that originally praised the prisoner costume for "originality."
"Some say" is offensive? What the hell is unoffensive about a man in blackface, dreadlocks and a prison uniform?
Any sane manager of anything would know this is unacceptable.... oh, wait- seems this Julie Myers is another of Bush's crony appointments who has NO qualifications for the job, at all.

Marijuana Replaces Opium As the Top Crop in Afghanistan

KHWAJA GHOLAK, Afghanistan - Amid the multiplying frustrations of the fight against narcotics in Afghanistan, the northern province of Balkh has been hailed as a rare and glowing success.
"As a consequence," the United Nations report warned, "farmers who do not cultivate opium poppy may turn to cannabis cultivation."
Last year Mr. Ayud's parcel was mostly opium poppies. But his crop was wiped out by government officials during a campaign led by the provincial governor, Atta Mohammad Noor, who jailed dozens of growers for disobeying him and personally waded into several poppy fields swinging a stick at the flower stems.
This year he planted cannabis instead, with some cotton as a fallback in case the government followed through on its promises to eradicate the illicit crop. It was a return to a family tradition, he said. His father and grandfather grew cannabis here.

Mayoral Candidate Nabbed In Toe-Tapping Toilet Tryst

Florida has to get it's two cents in since everyone has forgotten about Mark Foley-
DAYTONA BEACH -- A former Daytona Beach city commissioner and a local high school teacher arrested Thursday during a sex sting at a Volusia mall bathroom were released from the Volusia County Brach Jail today, authorities said.
Former commissioner and mayoral candidate Mike Shallow and David Behringer, an athletic trainer and teacher at Seabreeze High School, posted $1,000 bail today after midnight, a jail spokesman said.
"Most everything that's occurring is nonverbal," said Sgt. Jeff Hoffman, supervisor of the criminal suppression team.
Offenders coughed or sneezed, tapped their feet, sometimes under the stall beside them, or made loud zipper noises to attract attention from others interested in engaging in sexual acts, Hoffman said.

Aussie Family Values Party Drops Candidate Over Porn Pics

This post, written by Paddy, originally appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Films Blog
CANBERRA (Reuters) - A family values campaigner accused of taking pornographic photographs of himself has been dumped as a candidate for Australia's November election by the Christian-values Family First Party.
Sydney music teacher Andrew Quah, 21, admitted photographs showing his penis and circulating widely on gay websites had embarrassed his party and made his candidacy untenable.
"But that's not my penis," Quah told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, adding one of the images may have been digitally altered.
"I might have been drunk off my face, or my political enemies might have drugged me," Quah said. "It was a mistake that I would not have committed had I been of right mind. All I know, I have been humiliated."
I'm guessing he's been humiliated for a completely different reason, since the people who have seen the pictures have dubbed him, "The Smallest Loser". My.
