The Death Penalty Is Dying

The death penalty is dying.  Fewer death sentences are being pronounced and fewer are being pursued, as prosecutors find America’s juries increasingly uncomfortable with the failures in the system.

End the Death Penalty Today on Meet the Bloggers

In this progressive era, isn't it time for the U.S. to abolish the death penalty? Doesn't everyone know by now the death penalty doesn't work as a deterrent and costs taxpayers more to prosecute than life imprisonment without the possibility of parole? It's uncivilized, ineffective, and inhumane.

Shop Responsibly with Reverend Billy Today on Meet the Bloggers

The recent Black Friday tragedies at Wal-Mart in New York and Toys "R" Us in California may finally help break the spell of mindless consumerism and rampant commercialism. We're taking up that cause in today's Meet the Bloggers with Rev. Billy and Savitra D of the Church of Stop Shopping and the documentary What Would Jesus Buy?  They will join host Cenk Uygur and blogger Latoya Peterson (NewDream.org) to discuss ways of avoiding sweatshop purchases, staying out of the malls and big box stores, and how to put more meaning into the holidays without putting more stuff under the tree.

Reclaiming Thanksgiving

As we all make plans for Thanksgiving, I want to put some food for thought on your table. As you probably know, what we consider to be the first Thanksgiving occurred round about 1621 as the newly arrived pilgrims sat down with some Wampanoag Indians for a feast to celebrate a plentiful harvest. For the record, this harvest celebration was not new but has equivalents in cultures around the world stretching back to the limits of recorded time, but, at any rate, the menu on that festive New England day likely included, cod, eel, swan, partridge, eagles, seal, flour, Indian corn, chestnuts, acorns, radishes, plums, dried currants, parsnips and of course, wild turkey. Notably, that menu did not include such thanksgiving staples as: ham, sweet potatoes - or not sweet potatoes - pumpkin pie, milk, eggs, and, believe it or not, cranberry sauce. They had cranberries, but no sugar.

How Food Companies Have Caused Obesity

As a nutrition professor, I am constantly asked why nutrition advice changes so much and why experts so often disagree.  Whose information, people ask me, can we trust? I’m always tempted to say, “Mine, of course,” but I understand the problem.  Yes, nutrition advice is complicated by scientific arguments, the vested interests of food companies, and compromised government regulations.  But basic dietary advice has been the same for 50 years and is not in dispute.  I summarize it as “eat less; move more; eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains; and avoid too much junk food.”  Michael Pollan says the same thing more succinctly: “Eat food.  Not too much.  Mostly plants.”

Darcy Burner Can End the Iraq War Responsibly

When it comes to the Iraq war, the question is no longer whether the U.S. should end it, but how.  On yesterday's Meet the Bloggers, special guest Darcy Burner made the case for A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq, which she co-authored earlier this year.  This plan calls for the removal of U.S. troops rapidly and safely, while increasing diplomacy and foreign aid to rebuild Iraq.

According the Burner, we're already beginning to see the Responsible Plan in action.  Any recent "success" in Iraq is NOT due to the military surge, despite what the Bush adminstration, John McCain, and the corporate media would have us believe.  Rather, the progress we've made in Iraq is due to new diplomatic, economic, and political efforts to foster stability.  What's more, the recent attempts by Congress to reform our interrogation policies, to hold private contractors in Iraq accountable, and to create the GI Bill for the 21st Century were all specifics initially recommended by the Responsible Plan, not to mention calls for a troop withdrawal timetable.

But ending the Iraq war is only part of the Responsible Plan.  The show's panel of bloggers David Goldstein (HorsesAss.org), Joan McCarter (Daily Kos), and Matt Stoller (Open Left) pointed out that we must also repair the structural problems that led us into Iraq in the first place.  Failures across the board, from our branches of government to our media, must be fixed in order to prevent a quagmire like this from happening again.  Stoller suggested a crucial first step would be for the Bush administration to admit this war was all for oil, and that we cannot be intimidated by right-wing media, Big Oil executives, and conservatives who attempt to smear us for connecting Iraq with oil and our economy.
