FAQs

How to Support AlterNet

Thank you for helping us in the fight for democracy! You can support us by either buying our merchandise on TeePublic, making a donation via our Kindest or PayPal, or purchasing a subscription for ad-lite or ad-free access to our website.

If you prefer to do so the old fashioned way, you can send us a check made out to AlterNet at the following address:

AlterNet Media, Inc.
PO Box 38583
Germantown, TN 38183

Be sure to include your name and email address so we may properly thank you.

What’s With All the Ads?

Our firm belief is that everyone should have access to the news, and thus do not lock our articles behind a paywall like many publications do today. Instead, we allow advertisements so we can properly compensate our journalists and keep our website up and running.

For those who prefer to view AlterNet without ads, you can subscribe for ad-free access here, or for reduced ads here.

Subscriptions and Donations

What’s the difference between making a donation and purchasing a subscription?

Donations

Donations are made through Kindest or PayPal and can be any amount you see fit. You can make a one-time donation or a monthly donation. One-time donations of $95 or more and monthly donations of $10 or more automatically qualify you for access to the ad-free version of AlterNet.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are made through our website and either give you access to the ad-lite or ad-free version of AlterNet. They can be paid on either a monthly, annual, or biannual basis. Subscriptions are separate from our daily newsletter, which you can sign up for at no cost to you.

What is Piano?

Piano is the service we use to manage our subscriptions.

What kind of subscriptions are available?

We currently provide subscriptions for the ad-lite and ad-free versions of AlterNet that can be renewed monthly, annually, or biannually.

How do I renew my subscription?

Subscriptions are set to renew automatically by default. If you would prefer to renew manually, go to your account by clicking the My Account button and choose the Library tab to edit your renewal preferences.

How do I cancel my subscription?

To cancel your subscription, go to your account by clicking the My Account button and choosing the Library tab. Select your subscription to edit it.

How do I edit my payment information?

To edit your payment information, go to your account by clicking the My Account button and choosing the Cards tab. From there you can either add a new payment method or edit one already on file.

Why am I still seeing ads as a subscriber?

You must be logged in for the ads to go away or be reduced. To log in, simply click the AlterNet+ Login button near the top of the webpage and enter your email address and password. If you are logged in, you should instead see the My Account button next to a Logout button.

I forgot my password!

Piano does not save passwords, so you must create a new password to log back into your account. Click the AlterNet+ Login button near the top of the webpage and click the link in blue that says “I forgot my password,” then follow the instructions on the screen. You will get an email with a link to reset.

If the reset form does not load, clear your cookies or do so in an Incognito window on Google Chrome.

Is there a subscription for people with low income?

Email our Membership Assistant, Reneé Gasbarre, at renee@alternet.org to ask about our low-income discounts.

What is your refund policy?

All payments made to AlterNet are non-refundable, but we reserve the right to issue refunds at our discretion. If we issue a refund in one instance, we are under no obligation to issue one in another.

About AlterNet

AlterNet's Mission

AlterNet is an award-winning news magazine and online community that creates original journalism and amplifies the best of hundreds of other independent media sources. AlterNet's aim is to inspire action and advocacy on the environment, human rights and civil liberties, social justice, media, health care issues, and more. Since its inception in 1998, AlterNet.org has grown dramatically to keep pace with the public demand for independent news. We provide free online content to millions of readers, serving as a reliable filter, keeping our vast audience well-informed and engaged, helping them to navigate a culture of information overload and providing an alternative to the commercial media onslaught.

Strong Content

AlterNet publishes grassroots success stories and inspirational narratives alongside hard-hitting critiques of policies, investigative reports and expert analysis. We emphasize workable solutions to persistent social problems. Our editorial mix underscores a commitment to fairness, equality and global stewardship, and to making connections across generational, ethnic and issue lines.

Huge Readership and Reach

AlterNet receives more than one million unique monthly visitors and more than seven million monthly page views. AlterNet's readers comprise a strong base, who help virally spread AlterNet content to their networks by forwarding stories and emailing links. Many of AlterNet's readers come from search engines (like Google) and news aggregator sites (such as Flipboard), a testament to the fact that AlterNet reaches beyond the typical “choir" of progressive readers.

Building a Strong Community and Influence on the Web

AlterNet is successful at building community, as well as influence. Over 30,000 commenters are registered on the site, and many of our stories receive hundreds of comments from these dedicated readers.

STRATEGIC JOURNALISM

AlterNet has developed a unique model of journalism to confront the failures of corporate media, as well as the vitriol and disinformation of right wing media, especially “hate talk" media. Not only do we keep our readers highly informed on a wide array of topics, from hundreds of experts and sources, but we also provide laser focus on the most compelling issues of the day. We offer our readers comprehensive information, a positive vision for the future, and concrete action steps towards change. AlterNet believes that media must have a higher purpose beyond the essential goal of keeping people informed. We insist on playing an active role in helping our community funnel its energy into change.
