Our Public Schools Have a Diversity Problem - And Maybe They Like it That Way

When a study was released recently, finding that white teachers were less likely to expect a black student to earn a college degree, the result was the now-familiar hand-wringing about the diversity of the teaching force. The case for hiring more black teachers, especially in urban school districts, is one I’ve long made myself. But perhaps the research about a white teacher/black student expectations gap points to a different answer. Maybe it really means that black students should be in schools with black teachers.

Before NFL Players Made Their Move, Students Were Protesting Racial Injustice

While it took fighting words to be said by Donald Trump for NFL players to make a move, young people understood the magnitude of the moment much sooner. They’ve been standing up, fighting back and “taking a knee” to protest racial injustice for months. Many of our young people, high school and collegiate athletes among them, were some of the first to understand the power of the protest and that protesting injustice is hardest when it is not in vogue.

Black Men Are Welcoming Students Back to Schools with No Black Teachers. What's Wrong With This Picture?

A new tradition has started at schools in cities like Atlanta, Hartford and Boston. Black men from the community, dressed in suits and other professional attire, stand outside the school doors to welcome students to the start of another year. Just like the starting lineup line at a game, where teammates receive players with high-fives, the men form an aisle for students to walk down as they approach the school doors. Students are greeted with words of encouragement, slaps on the back and head, or some dap, to signal to kids that school matters. So what could possibly be wrong with this “it takes a village” display? When those same kids enter into their schools, they see a teaching force that is predominantly female and white. The doors of the school shut with the Black men outside of the village. What kind of message does that send to kids?

Colin Kaepernick Can’t Get a Job: What Are the Ramifications for Social Protest?

Before the #CharlottesvilleSyllabus, quarterback Colin Kaepernick was teaching kids essential lessons about white supremacy and racial injustice. The awful events in Charlottesville were a confirmation that Kaepernick was correct when he chose to kneel rather than stand while the national anthem played and Old Glory flew in the air. The racists who gathered weren’t just waving Nazi flags and Confederate flags; they also waved American flags. But for students, particularly Black and Brown kids in our urban schools, the message of Kaepernick’s protest isn’t just that we live in an unjust society but that there’s a high price for speaking out.

Why the NAACP Said 'Enough' to School Privatization

The reaction to the NAACP’s hard-hitting new report  on charter schools, calling for tighter regulation and an end to for-profit schools, was swift and furious. Charter advocates and school choice proponents painted the NAACP as out of touch, or worse, doing the bidding of the teachers unions. These critics are missing what’s most important about the civil rights group’s strong statement. School privatization has allowed state governments to avoid their obligation to educate children of color, especially the poor. The NAACP said “enough” this week.

Charter Schools Are Constantly Burning Out Teachers - And They Often Like It That Way

John was fresh-out-of-college and had never set foot in a city school before. Hired the day before the school year started, he missed out on the two-and-a-half weeks of training the charter organization had given the rest of us on what to expect at a turnaround school in Camden, NJ. John lasted less than a week.
