A Year Ago the DOJ Agreed to Review the Police Killing of This Teenager - His Family Is Still Waiting

On August 9th in Ferguson, Missouri, Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was killed by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. Brown was shot at least six times, according to the autopsy. Protests erupted in Ferguson and within days, thousands held rallies and vigils in nationwide solidarity. While protests continued and the #Ferguson hashtag kept trending, America watched as the hyper-militarized police repression in Ferguson grew more violent. Brown was eighteen years old.

What the "What Would I Say?" App Tells Us About Ourselves

Trending on Google and Facebook this past week, what-would-i-say.com is a new app made by Princeton graduate students during last weekend’s Princeton Hackathon that creates Facebook statuses to sound like users based on their past posts. After going live November 10th, the site crashed on Nov. 11 and Nov. 13 due to heavy traffic. But what made this game of algorithmic MadLibs so popular? Might we learn something about ourselves, if not from the statuses, then from the site’s wild popularity?

Is Berlin the Coolest Cultural Spot in the Western World?

Confronting the national past—an important and ongoing exercise for any nation—is especially fraught for a country like Germany, whose recent pasts perhaps more urgently beg for confrontation than most. And so it is that Germany is known for its formalized memorialization of these regretted pasts, in the form of museums, monuments, exhibitions and tours. (One current debate in Berlin centers on whether Tempelhof Field, a former Nazi airport-turned-park, should remain undeveloped or not.)
