The NFL's Utter Hypocrisy About Racism

Earlier this year, Miami Dolphins lineman Jonathan Martin shocked the sports world by abruptly leaving his team, citing "bullying" from teammates, namely Richie Incognito. The subsequent investigation yielded text messages and voicemails from Incognito using the dreaded n-word and using degrading language in regards to Martin's sister. The entire fiasco has been a public relations nightmare for the NFL, revealing the vulgar, crude locker room environment that players are surrounded by every day. So, as usual, the NFL has offered a knee-jerk solution that's more about defending its image than creating any real change.

Politico's List of 53 'Journalists to Watch in 2014' Doesn't Have a Single Person of Color - Wonder Why?

Paula Deen's Comeback: Proof Racism Still Sells in America

Paula Deen has been rather quiet since a June deposition exposed her use of slurs and racial discrimination; a revelation that led to a loss of all of her endorsements and her television show. The Parents of Trayvon Martin Are Experiencing the Worst Fear of Every Black Family

The Trayvon Martin case has been nothing short of heartbreak from the very beginning. Regardless of what anyone believes about Trayvon's past, his innocence or George Zimmerman's, the fact remains that a teenager is dead. I honestly didn't think I would get emotionally broken up more than I was over the story that Rachel Jeantel's friendship with Martin stemmed from the fact he was one of the only people who never picked on her. The story painted such a tragic picture of friendship and two people whose lives will never be the same.

How Unpaid Internships and a Culture of Privilege are Sabotaging Journalism

Rolling Stone magazine drew the ire of journalists across the country last week when the owner, Jann Wenner, named his 22-year-old son, Gus, the head of the magazine’s website. Naturally, this move has been seen as blatant nepotism. Gus has been working on the website for a whopping six months and is, by most accounts, grossly underqualified for his position. Apparently, privilege has no place in journalism, where the playing field is even and journalists are given opportunities based on merit and hard work alone.
