Samantha Bee Shares Her Unorthodox Parenting Tips With Stephen Colbert
"Full Frontal" host Samantha Bee has an enviable "maple parachute"—dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada. But she's not leaving Trump's America any time soon.
"We are in it to win it here, Stephen," she told "Late Show" host Colbert when she guest-starred on the show Thursday. "We're not joking around. We chose this place, and we intend to fix it!"
Bee and her husband live in upper Manhattan with their three children aged 11, 9 and 6.
"Do they watch the show?" Colbert asked Bee, referring to "Full Frontal" on TBS.
"They do not watch the show, it's a dirty show," she answered. On the other hand, "they do love salty language."
"But that doesn't come from me," she added. "They just know it; they absorb it."
And Bee's expert parenting ploy draws on exploiting just this.
"I can get them do anything just by letting them use one piece of salty language in a conversation," she bragged. "That's their treat.... they don't want chocolate, they don't want anything like... cakes and other things normal children like, but they do love to swear."
"So," Bee continued. "If I want them to do something, I'm very cagey about it... 'If you clean your rooms diligently, you can sit together with me and do one high-quality swear.'"
According to Bee's rules, the swear has to be used in a proper sentence "and it has to make sense for the swear."
Colbert was stunned.
"Can you give me an example of a word you might allow the children to say?" he asked. "We'll bleep it."
