Trump may be gone — but state GOP lawmakers are still doing his bidding

Its been months since former President Donald Trump survived a second impeachment attempt after inciting an insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, but Republican lawmakers are still lashing out at their colleagues who voted in favor of Trump being impeached.

According to Fox News, Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio) are top targets for lawmakers' ire. Republicans with knowledge of the circumstances have revealed members of the Ohio Republican Party State Central Committee have drafted a resolution targeting the two lawmakers along with a number of other House Republican lawmakers including: Reps. Tom Rice (R-S.C.) Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Peter Meijer (R-Mich.), John Katko (R-N.Y.), David Valadao (R-Calif.), and Jaime Herrera Beutler and Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.).

In the resolution, Trump's impeachment trials were condemned and described as "meritless, partisan acts driven by retribution." Despite the arguments highlighting Trump's actions prior to the U.S. Capitol insurrection, the resolution claims that the January impeachment trial was "'unfairly expedited' and served "no purpose beyond further dividing this country."

Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican Senate candidate released a statement to Fox News expressing his disapproval of the lawmakers who voted against Trump.

"It has been 111 days since a very small group of 'Republicans,' including Ohio Congressman Anthony Gonzalez, voted with all of the Democrats to impeach an historic President who had already left office," Moreno said.

He also criticized the Ohio Republican Party for failing to move swiftly in drafting a resolution to censure opposing members of the political party.

Moreno added, "State Republican Party organizations across the country acted swiftly to censure members that went against the will of their constituents and supported the sham impeachment. The Ohio Republican Party JUST NOW got around to censuring Gonzalez; the chairman at the time, Jane Timken, said that Gonzalez had 'a rational reason' for voting to impeach the President."

The resolution is also urging Republicans to "unify as a party" and work together to uphold the U.S. Constitution and their oath to the "rule of law." Ironically, the Republican House members they are trying to censure voted "to support the unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment proceeding against President Donald J. Trump."
