Gov. Kemp and Lt. Gov. Duncan block request for pro-Trump Republicans to select their own electors in Georgia

Although Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has been a major ally of President Donald Trump, members of Trump's legal team have grown disenchanted with the far-right Republican for not helping them overturn the election results in his state — which President-elect Joe Biden narrowly won in the 2020 presidential election. And now, Kemp and Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan are blocking a request from pro-Trump Republicans who are asking for their own set of electors in Georgia.

Biden won Georgia's 16 electoral votes, but some Trump supporters in Georgia believe that they should have their own set of electors — who would give those electoral votes to Trump even though Biden is the winner. It's a blatant power grab, and four state senators in Georgia requested a special session for selecting their own electors. But Kemp and Duncan, according to WTOC-TV (the CBS affiliate in Savannah, Georgia), are denying that request.

In an official statement, Kemp and Duncan said, "The (Georgia) General Assembly decided that Georgia's presidential electors will be determined by the winner of the state's popular vote. Any attempt by the legislature to retroactively change that process for the November 3 election would be unconstitutional and immediately enjoined by the courts."

The 2020 presidential election has been followed by a great deal of infighting among Republicans in Georgia. Trump has been claiming, without evidence, that he was the victim of widespread voter fraud in Georgia. But Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a conservative Republican, has maintained that there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the Peach State and that Biden won Georgia's 16 electoral votes fair and square — and the Georgia Republicans who have been calling for Raffensperger to resign include Rep. Doug Collins, State David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler. Trump described Raffensperger as "an enemy of the people."
