Trump Organization, CFO Allen Weisslberg could face charges by  Thursday: report

The Manhattan district attorney's office is expected to bring charges against the Trump Organization and its Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The publication reports that charges could be filed as early as Thursday, July 1. According to Business Insider, the tax-related charges would be considered the "first wave of indictments following a two-year investigation into whether former President Donald Trump's sprawling real-estate company violated state laws and engaged in financial crimes."

The latest development comes just days after remarks from Trump's defense lawyer, Ron Fischetti. Speaking to Politico earlier this week, Fischetti insisted that his client would not face charges as part of the first indictment being reported.

Prosecutors "just said, 'When this indictment comes down, he won't be charged,'" Fischetti said to Politico. Since the DA's investigation will be ongoing, Trump may not personally be out of the woods yet.

In wake of the latest developments, legal experts are now weighing in with their perspective. Although it appears prosecutors have not yet managed to gain cooperation from Weisselberg, that does not mean he will not flip later on down the line. During an interview with NBC News, Fischetti also acknowledged that prosecutors were also interested in gaining information from others, as well.

"They could not get Allen Weisselberg to cooperate and tell them what they wanted to hear, and that's why they are going forward with these charges," Ficschetti told the publication last week. "They could not get him to cooperate because he would not say that Donald Trump had knowledge or any information that he may have been not deducting properly the use of cars or an apartment."

The publication reports that prosecutors have also been looking into Matthew Calamari, Trump's former bodyguard who now works as the company's chief operating officer (COO).

The Trump Organization reportedly has until Monday, July 5 to persuade prosecutors not to file formal charges.
