FBI director dispells theory about fake Trump supporters storming the Capitol

Christopher Wray, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has dispelled the ongoing conspiracy theory about fake Trump supporters being responsible for the siege on the U.S. Capitol.

When Wray before Congress on Tuesday, March 2, Wray was asked to weigh in on the unfounded claims and repeated theories that began circulating almost immediately after the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that occurred on Jan. 6.

Although many Trump supporters, and even lawmakers, have suggested the riots were carried out by members of Antifa posing as Trump supporters, Wray noted that there was no evidence to support the theory, reports Talking Points Memo.

In response to the questions, Wray told Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) that "While we're equal-opportunity in looking for violent extremism of any ideology, we have not, to date, seen any evidence of anarchist violent extremists or people subscribing to 'Antifa' in connection with the 6th."

He added, "That doesn't mean we're not looking, and we'll continue to look, but at the moment we have not seen that."

Offering an update on the investigation into the insurrection, Wray confirmed "authorities have charged members of militia groups and white supremacists — but the militia violent extremists are probably, at the moment, trending the biggest bucket, if you will.'"

At one point during the hearing, Wray also highlighted a report published by George Washington University. That report, also referenced by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), described the Capitol rioters as "'inspired believers' rather than individuals who operated as part of larger clusters or militia groups."

"More and more, the threat that we face as a country is what I would call the 'inspired attacks,'" Wray said. "They don't have formal membership in an organization. They don't have clear command and control direction in the way that, say, an Al Qaeda sleeper cell might have."
