GOP governor offers grim prediction for Republicans in the 2024 presidential election

One Republican governor has issued a grim, long-term election prediction for his political party.

Speaking to NBC-4 Washington, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) expressed concern about the future of the Republican Party as he insisted that he expects the party to lose elections for many years to come.

Although Sununu has not announced his intent to run for president in 2024, there are indicators that he may enter the race. Now, he's speaking out with his critical stance on other Republican lawmakers — many of whom are also viable contenders for the presidency.

“You don't penalize a private business because they disagree with you politically,” Sununu said of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

“Culture wars are not solved by the government,” Sununu said. “[The Republican Party] has let the message stray... that's not what we're about.”

Sununu also weighed in with a critical opinion of Trump and his attempt to run for office again. According to the New Hampshire governor, Trump should be a thing of the past.

“[Trump] has been there, done that. Why go backwards?” Sununu said of Trump’s current presidential campaign. “We've got a really great product on the Republican side — I just want to make sure that we're out there with the right message, selling it the right way.”

At one point during the interview, Sununu also explained how the generational gap will play a part in the 2024 presidential race.

“I do believe that as hard as ‘24 is going to be, if Republicans don't understand the generational gap that we have right now, ‘28, ‘30, ‘32, and 2036 are going to be disastrous for the Republican Party," he said. "You have to start building those bridges today."

“We can get that next generation of Republican voter back on the team, [but] a lot of those younger people are disenfranchised right now..." Sununu added. "The younger Republican priority is very different than the [priorities] of my generation and above. So let's hear them. Let's see what they want.”
