United States Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas/Cancun) is rabidly anti-choice and supports his state's efforts to ban abortion. But when it comes to requiring individuals to get inoculated against COVID-19 to protect public health, Cruz believes that the government has no business telling people what to do with their bodies.
On Wednesday afternoon, Cruz – who caught the coronavirus in 2020 – took a break from not legislating to complain on Twitter about vaccine mandates, which he views as an infringement upon personal liberty. This is in spite of the fact that for decades they have been required for students to attend public schools and travelers to visit foreign countries.
But Cruz has a brand to maintain.
“It’s time to end vaccine mandates. No petty government authoritarian should control personal medical decisions,” wrote Cruz.
Because legal prowess is not a prerequisite for noticing the inherent hypocrisy in Cruz's stance, observers on social media were quick to call him out on it.
"So you are going to condemn the draconian laws that make medical decisions for the women of Texas? It’s about time," one person asked.
"Including vaccine mandates that schools have used for decades? Polio redux, anyone?" quipped another.
Texas has also begun taking steps to classify gender reassignment surgery for transgender kids as "child abuse." On this too, Cruz has offered no objections to the state interfering in personal health matters.
Some accused Cruz of being pro-COVID, which is still killing nearly 2,000 Americans per day.
