Newly unsealed court order demands the Trump Org comply with subpoenas from the NY attorney general

More than eight months after former President Donald Trump left the White House, his company, the Trump Organization, continues to be investigated by New York State Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan DA Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. This week, according to Law & Crime reporter Adam Klasfeld, a three-page court order was unsealed —and it orders the Trump Organization to show a record of compliance with subpoenas from James' office.

The order, Klasfeld notes, gives the Trump Organization until Thursday, September 30, to give James' office a "report, in reasonable detail, of actions taken to preserve, collect, and produce hard-copy and electronic documents" pertaining to her subpoenas.

In a written statement, James complained, "For more than a year now, the Trump Organization has failed to adequately respond to our subpoenas, hiding behind procedural delays and excuses. Once again, the court has ordered that the Trump Organization must turn over the information and documents we are seeking, otherwise face an independent third-party that will ensure that takes place. Our work will continue undeterred because no one is above the law."

James, a Democrat who was elected attorney general for New York State in the 2018 midterms, launched her investigation of the Trump Organization in March 2019. Her office has been trying to determine whether or not the Trump Organization wrongly inflated the value of its assets in the past.

James and Vance have investigated the Trump Organization separately. However, James' office has been assisting Vance's office in its prosecution of the Trump Organization; Vance's investigation has resulted in criminal charges for long-time Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg. Donald Trump himself has not been charged with anything.

Klasfeld notes, "Attorney General James' office already grilled Eric Trump late last year before Election Day, after a New York judge rejected a request by the then-president's scion for a post-November 3 delay. Erstwhile First Daughter Ivanka Trump complained, in the past, about being dragged into state AG's investigations — both in New York and Washington, D.C."

The records that the Trump Organization must produce in order to be compliant with James' subpoenas, according to the three-page court order, include "any appraisals or other valuations, purchase records, and any balance sheets, income statements, general ledgers, financial statements, or similar materials reflecting the value or financial performance of any Trump Organization property whose value is identified in or incorporated into any Statement of Financial Condition."
