'Disloyalty': Trump goes after evangelicals in fiery new rant

Former President Donald Trump recently shared a critical opinion of evangelical voters although they has a major impact on his last two presidential campaigns.

In 2016, evangelicals fiercely supported Trump, contributing to his presidential win, but in 2020, many of those same voters expressed apprehension about supporting him. That apprehension subsequently contributed to his defeat.

Trump on Monday did not mince when he expressed his disapproval of them.

Appearing for an interview with the right-wing television network, Real America’s Voice, Trump complained that evangelicals just haven't been loyal enough to him.

Speaking to right-wing host, David Brody, Trump deeply criticized the evangelicals who have spoken out against him after he announced his 2024 presidential run.

“That’s a sign of disloyalty,” the ex-president told Brody during the interview. “There’s great disloyalty in the world of politics, and that’s a sign of disloyalty.”

Trump noted that his three U.S. Supreme Court nominees were responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade, a goal right-wing conservatives have sought to achieve for a very long time. However, Trump is now claiming he's disappointed in that same group of voters saying, “I thought they could’ve fought much harder during the election, the ’22 election."

Although Republican analysts have argued that the political party under performed in the midterms due, in part, to the former president's backing of unfavorable candidates, Trump argues that evangelicals are to blame.

“A lot of them didn’t fight or weren’t really around to fight,” Trump said of the faction of religious voters.

Trump's criticism of evangelicals comes just two months after he announced his third presidential campaign. However, this time, there wasn't nearly as much enthusiasm about his decision as in the past. In. fact, the former president has been met with scrutiny and apprehension as many believe he could negatively impact the party.

“There’s a lot of people who share a lot of our similar thoughts but don’t want to go on record,” evangelical activist Bob Vander Plaats said to Vanity Fair weeks ago. “You can see that it’s almost a silent majority right now.”

Despite Trump's claims, he previously faced criticism for leveraging evangelicals to advance his first presidential campaign. Speaking to The Washington Post, Mike Evans previously insisted the former president "used" evangelicals.

“We had to close our mouths and eyes when he said things that horrified us,” Evans told the news outlet. “I cannot do that anymore.”

Everett Piper, a columnist for the Washington Times who previously served as a fierce supporter of Trump, also had a critical opinion of the former president as he kicks off his third presidential campaign.

Piper also offered a grim election prediction for the party if Trump wins the Republican presidential nomination. Speaking of Trump, he said, “If he‘s our nominee in 2024, we will get destroyed.”
