Conservative attorney George Conway — who is running for Congress in New York as a Democrat — is now calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked to remove President Donald Trump from power.
In a Wednesday interview with former CNN host Jim Acosta on his Substack channel, Conway called Trump's recent speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland "the most embarrassing moment we have ever seen for the United States of America." He referenced numerous flubs the president made during his speech, like mistaking Greenland for Iceland, and likened Trump's appearance to a skit on "Saturday Night Live."
"To do that on the world stage at this moment in time, on top of everything else that he's done ... it's just beyond," Conway said.
Acosta piled on, reminding viewers about Trump's remarks repeating the "big lie" that he won the 2020 election, and baselessly claiming that China has no windmills despite having hundreds of wind farms. He then asked Conway if he thought it was a "stretch" to consider removing Trump via the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The longtime conservative lawyer agreed the 25th Amendment was necessary, arguing that Trump's mental decline was "accelerating" rapidly."
"We became so used to having a president who is incoherent, rambles, who just talks about himself, who is detached from reality, that it takes a new low, like a new low beyond anything else we've ever seen to get people talking about Donald Trump and the 25th Amendment ... there is always a new low," Conway said.
"I'm going to get a little bit serious because it is accelerating now ... It's accelerating because of those reasons I talked about, the lack of adult supervision, his getting old and more inhibited, his mental deterioration also, which combines with age. But also it's the stress of knowing that deep down, he knows things aren't going well for him," he continued. "He's a narcissistic sociopath, and the worst people in history like Saddam [Hussein] and [Adolf] Hitler and [Josef] Stalin, they were all narcissistic sociopaths. They tend to create their own reality as they get older and things stop going so well for them ... He is more dangerous than ever."
Conway cautioned that the 25th Amendment wasn't a complete solution, as it requires the presidential Cabinet to ultimately make the decision to put the vice president in power if the president is deemed no longer capable to carry out the duties of the office. Then, should the president insist that they are indeed capable of serving, Congress can designate an independent body to make the final decision as to whether to sideline the president. Conway doubted that Trump's current Cabinet would ever invoke the 25th Amendment as they were "worried about getting written out of the will."
"We absolutely have to do that. It's one of the many things we have to do if this country is to survive," Conway said.
