A Republican has led the Iowa state house for nearly a decade, and for the first time in over 20 years, a Democrat had a strong chance to take office.
According to the Decision Desk HQ and NBC, Democrat Rob Sand has officially been declared the winner of the Iowa governor's race.
Iowa had a unique election cycle in 2026, with the governor's race and the U.S. Senate seat open after Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds and Sen. Joni Ernst decided not to run for reelection. Those races add to the possibility that the Iowa First and Third Congressional Districts could flip from Republican to Democrat.
Sand, the state auditor, led GOP nominee Zack Lahn in polling in the Hawkeye State since the summer. But as the race grew closer, the lead widened, putting Sand at over eight points ahead of Lahn, MS NOW's polling aggregator said. However, some of the polling appeared less solid than others. For example, the Marist poll had a 6.6 percent margin of error for its likely-voter results. If that is 6.6 points below, Sand still had a lead.
While Iowa voters have largely backed Trump over the past several years, that favorability has collapsed under the weight of a struggling economy and his war in Iran.
Lahn hasn't been a traditional status quo Republican as he campaigned around the state. Lahn has challenged parts of the agricultural establishment, while Sand is trying to win voters beyond the Democratic base through his record and state-focused message and by talking about affordability and raising wages.
Lahn suffered a bruising primary that left Republican-aligned voters and organizations unsettled. "The Progressive Farmer" reported that Republican farmers supported Sand after Randy Feenstra lost the GOP primary. Neither the Iowa Farm Bureau PAC nor the Iowa Association of Business and Industry endorsed a candidate in the governor’s race
Lahn's biggest climb was overcoming Sand's statewide profile as auditor, particularly when it came to fraud and public accountability. Voters listed political corruption as one of the top three issues this election. So, Sand already had a baked-in understanding of his values and a proven track record of a top issue.
That gives voters a reason to evaluate him separately from the national Democratic Party. Cook Political Report analyst Erin Covey identified him as a candidate positioned to outperform his party’s usual showing. While the race has already been called, the final details will shake out in the coming days.
