Sidney Powell facing possible sanctions by Texas regulators for filing frivolous election lawsuits

Sidney "Kraken" Powell, an attorney who helped spearhead former President Donald Trump's legal challenges aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 election, could be facing punishment by Texas state regulators.

Powell played an instrumental role in the plethora of Team Trump's dubious lawsuits claiming that there was rampant voter fraud in critical swing states, which courts across the country have repeatedly rejected.

On Tuesday, the State Bar of Texas Commission for Lawyer Discipline asked a judge to consider imposing disciplinary action against Powell for her participation in litigation that she knew was nonsense.

"Respondent (Powell) had no reasonable basis to believe the lawsuits she filed were not frivolous," stated the complaint, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters. The outlet added that the filing "called the suits a violation of a federal ethics rule requiring an attorney's due diligence before asserting claims in court."

Powell maintains that she did nothing wrong and that the very practice of law is now under assault.

"The Texas bar decision was totally expected, but it is an unfortunate and poor decision by the Bar," Powell said. "No lawyer could practice law under the rule they would set for me."

Reuters noted that last August a Michigan judge admonished Powell for knowingly filing bogus lawsuits.

Powell partook in a "historic and profound abuse of the judicial process," said Judge Linda Parker of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Team Trump's complaint "was never about fraud," Parker continued. "It was about undermining the people's faith in our democracy and debasing the judicial process to do so."

Powell is also embroiled in a $1.2 billion defamation case filed by Dominion Voting Systems against herself and other cranks that were in Trump's orbit – including ex-New York City Rudy Giuliani and MyPillow founder Mike Lindell – who falsely accused the company of miscounting ballots and illegally installing Joe Biden as president.
